Hyde School hosted the 2012 Class A League Wrestling Championships on Saturday 11 February. This tournament brought together the 13 school of the New England Class A League to qualify the top 4 place winning wrestlers in each weight class for the Prep School New Englands on February 18th and 19th.
The pace of the day was furious and the action on the mats was intense. 14 nationally ranked wrestlers competed in the tournament, including Hyde – ME 170 pounder Bemnet Banks, who entered the tournament ranked 7th.
Hyde wrestlers gave it their all and at the end of the day finished tied for 9th place with Tilton School of NH with 54.5 points. Northfield – Mount Hermon School won the tournament and was followed by Phillips Academy.
In the individual weight classes, junior 113 Austin Wang rebounded from a pair of heartbreaking losses in matches he was winning to earn a 6th place finish. Junior 182 Lukas Fischer wrestled well against everyone he faced, but fell to his nemesis from Williston – Northhampton by the score of 7-5 in the 5th place bout. Sophomore 138 Andrew Martz finished the day 3-2 but finished just shy of placing. Senior 152 Scott Georgaklis defeated Hyde – CT rival Kenrick Vincent by technical fall, but also finished just shy of placing.
In the championship finals, all eyes fell on senior Bemnet Banks as he squared off against his Northfield – Mount Hermon foe. This battle of #2 vs. #1 in New England and #7 vs. #6 in the nation did not disappoint. It was a technical battle where Bemnet twice got through his opponent’s defenses to apparently score only to have the action called “out of bounds”. In the 3rd period, Bemnet went in to the period with the score tied at 2 before he secured a reversal to go up 4-2. In the final 30 seconds, Bemnet released his opponent and battled on his feet to secure the 4-3 victory!
Congratulations to 2012 Class A Champion Bemnet Banks!
All eyes will once again be on Bemnet Banks at the New Englands this weekend where odds are that he will face the same competitor in the championship finals once again. Joining him will be senior 145 Alec Randall and hopefully junior 182 Lukas Fischer. Alec has qualified for the New Englands based on his season record and Lukas awaits approval of the coach’s petition of his season record.
Wish us luck!
