Bath: JV Phoenix Basketball Week in Review

JV Basketball Faces Waynflete, Kents Hill, and Sacopee Valley

The Hyde JV Men’s Basketball team had three games in the past 7 days. Last Tuesday, Waynflete travelled to Bath to face the Phoenix for the 2nd time in less than a week. Both teams came out strong and played an evenly matched first half, leading to a 17-17 tie at halftime. In the second half, close competition continued with Waynflete going on some nice runs to earn a 6 point lead. The Phoenix responded, and the Flyers and Phoenix were tied at 37 with less than 4 minutes to go. As the Phoenix tried to remain aggressive, the Flyers applied some great pressure forcing the Phoenix into multiple turnovers. The Phoenix couldn’t find a way to respond and the Flyers emerged victorious with a final score of 48-37. Evander Lenardson ’14 led Phoenix scorers with 10 points and Andrew Kraai ’14 had 8 points, including going 4 of 6 from the free throw line.

On Saturday the Phoenix headed up to Kents Hill for their second meeting with the Huskies. The first contest of the season was an overtime victory for the Phoenix and this game brought the same intensity from the onset. The Huskies jumped out to a quick lead as the Phoenix struggled to play as a team. In the second quarter the Phoenix chipped into the Husky lead, bringing the score to 26-20 in favor of Kents Hill at the half. The Phoenix stepped up their intensity in the second half and tied the score in the third; however, a late run by the Huskies put them up by 6 entering the 4th. The Phoenix continued to battle, led by Wondo Shaw ’13 who scored 8 of his team high 11 points in the 4th quarter. However, Kents Hill did an excellent job hitting their free throws in the final two minutes, securing victory 50-43. The Phoenix showed great resiliency in this contest and never gave up, making a deposit in their “effort savings bank”.

Yesterday the Phoenix headed to Hiram, Maine to face the Sacopee Valley Hawks for the second time this year. The Phoenix, led by Nabil Eshraghian ’13, Zach Heatley ’14, and Wondo Shaw ’13 came out hot, scoring 23 points in the first quarter, their highest scoring quarter of the season. Heatley ’14 and Evander Lenardson ’14 kept the intensity high in the second quarter and the Phoenix entered halftime with a double digit lead. In the second half the Phoenix focused on offensive and defensive execution and getting everybody on the team significant minutes. Seven different Phoenix players scored in the contest, including Herman Gao ’12 with a 6 point contribution and David Wu ’15 finishing a nice fast break. Heatley ’14 led all scorers with 13 points, including going 5 of 6 from the free throw line. The final score was 59-40 in favor of Hyde.

With the win against Sacopee, the Phoenix bring their season record to 6-7. The Phoenix now enter the final stage of their season, with two games remaining. Their next contest is tomorrow at Hebron. Tipoff is scheduled for 3pm.
