Phoenix defeat defending champion Richmond!
The Hyde Phoenix (9-0) put on a defensive clinic against defending Western Maine Regional Champion Richmond (4-8) on Wednesday January 18th. Led by Tyquan Ekejiuba ’13, Talin Rowe ’14, Wilson MacMillan’12 and Jonah Alexander ’12, the Phoenix held the Bobcats scoreless in the first quarter, and to zero field goals in the first half. Andrew Herron’13 led all scorers with 8 points. The team got an inside boost from juniors Ben Burlock ’13 and Ryan Cassidy ’13 who saw lengthy minutes. Burlock ’13 contributed 4 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Ryan Cassidy ’13 had 5 points and 9 rebounds. Hyde rotated players throughout the 3rd and 4th quarters and they continue to improve upon their team approach to basketball.
Hyde conquers Isleboro!
The Phoenix journeyed to the island community of Isleboro off the coast of Maine on Thursday, January 19th. They faced the Isleboro Eagles who had handily defeated the Phoenix last year. However, the much improved Phoenix quickly jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, leading 18-8 after the first period. In the 2nd quarter, the Phoenix clamped down on the defense and went to full court pressure. The Phoenix proceeded to go on an 18-0 run to put the game out of reach. Jonah Alexander ‘12 had 20 points and 5 steals to lead the way. Chris Moulton ‘12 anchored the paint. The Phoenix got excellent energy from Wilson MacMillan ’14 and Kiefer Cundy ’15 off the bench. Ben Burlock ’13 and Talin Rowe ’14 added 7 points each. Point Guard Tyquan Ekejiuba’13 had 5 steals and 6 assists in limited action. The Phoenix were able to play multiple line-ups and continued to develop their team approach.
Phoenix upend Huskies!
The Phoenix continued their winning ways on Saturday January 21st, upending the Kents Hill Huskies by a score of 63-55.
Hyde got out to an early lead with baskets by Jonah Alexander ’12 and Chris Moulton ’12. The Phoenix led throughout most of the 1st half controlling the tempo of the game. However, the Huskies rallied and went on a 14-4 run to take a 30-25 lead at the break. Kents Hill was able to extend their lead early in the 2nd half by 10 points. However, the Phoenix rallied with some outstanding perimeter defense by Jack Peters ’12, Tyquan Ekejiuba ’13 and Talin Rowe’14, forcing Kents Hill into some costly turnovers. Led by Jack Peters ’12 who finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 7 steals, the Phoenix closed out the game outscoring the Huskies 38-23 in the second-half. Junior Ryan Cassidy’13 contributed valuable minutes, adding 4 points and 5 rebounds as well as some solid interior defense. Warsame Mohamed ’14 also chipped in 10 points.
