Bath: Hyde Varsity Wrestling week in review

On Saturday the Phoenix made the arduous journey to Wilbraham, MA for a 5 team Class A League meet.  Due to inclement weather, only the Hoggers of Northfield – Mount Hermon and the Phoenix of Hyde-ME travelled to clash with the host Titans of Wilbraham-Monson Academy.  The battle against the elements on the long way home was made much easier by the 2-0 record we compiled on the day!

In our first match of the day, Hyde took on NMH and suffered only two losses en route to a dominating 50 – 18 win.  Standouts were middle weights Billy Martinez (junior 132) and Andrew Martz (sophomore 138) who linked techniques and racked up lots of points en route to their wins by major decisions.  Seniors Alec Randall (145), Scott Georgaklis (152), and Bemnet Banks (170), and junior 182 Lukas Fischer also wrestled to victories by pin.

Against the host WMA Titans, Martinez, Martz, Randall, and Banks continued their winning ways and had help form senior 195 James Schnatterly’s first win of the season.  WMA capitalized on several Phoenix miscues, but the boys from Bath managed  to hold on for the team victory by the score of 42-36.

The Phoenix will wrap the dual meet portion of the season next weekend at Avon- Old Farms School in Avon, CT in a quad meet with Worcester Academy, Lexington Christian Academy, and the host Winged Beavers..  Our record now stands at 7-6 on the season, and we have the chance to earn our first winning dual meet season in a few years.  We are going to need a focused, committed  week of practice in the Gary Kent Wrestling Center, and serious intentions on Saturday!  The coaches feel like this team deserves it, now all we have to do is get out on the mat and earn it!
