On Wednesday, the Hyde Phoenix varsity wrestlers travelled to Phillips Exeter in New Hampshire for a tri-meet with the host “Big Red” and the Rams of Tilton School. In December, Tilton upended Hyde in our first meeting. Such was not the case on Wednesday!
The Phoenix came out wrestling tough. Freshman heavyweight Austin Makris started the match, and wrestled very well in his first varsity contest, though he lost to a more experienced wrestler. Hyde then picked up one win by forfeit, and suffered two tough losses before junior 132 Billy Martinez took to the mat. Billy wrestled an outstanding match en route to a 4-3 victory. Sophomore Andrew Martz then electrified the Phoenix bench recording his first win of the season by pin at 138. Senior Alec Randall (145), senior captain Chester Hill (160), and senior captain Bemnet Banks (170) answered his win by pin with pins of their own. Junior 182 Lukas Fischer wrestled very well though lost by decision to returning Tilton’s defending New England Champion. When the dust settled, Hyde avenged our previous loss to the Rams and came out on top by the score of 39-33.
In the second match of the day, Exeter wrestled to a victory over the Phoenix by the score of 50-25, capitalizing on 4 straight victories in the upper weights to seal the match. Congratulations to sophomore 120 Brian Edwards on his first win of the season! Other standouts included Martinez (2-0 on the day), Hill (2-0) on the day, and Banks (2-0 on the day).
The Phoenix return to the mat on Saturday in a quad meet at Phillips Andover, facing Hyde-CT, Deerfield Academy, and the Big Blue of the host school.
