Bath: Phoenix Varsity Basketball Week in Review

On Friday December 16th the Hyde Phoenix travelled to South Berwick, Maine to play Seacoast Christian School.  Hyde started strong, erupting with a 20-0 run to start the game. They were led by the pressure defense of Tyquan Ekejiuba’12Talin Rowe ’14, and Jonah Alexander ’12. Alexander led the Phoenix with 4 field goals in the first quarter.  Chris Moulton ‘12 anchored the defense putting up a double-double, gathering 10 points and 12 rebounds.  He also had a game high 6 blocked shots.  Warsame Mohamed ‘14 led all scorers with 11 points.  In the second half, the sophomore leadership of Wilson MacMillan ’14, Talin Rowe ’14, and Evander Lenardson ’14 sealed the win for the Phoenix, 59-27.  The Phoenix moved to 2-0 in Maine Principal’s Association (MPA) high school basketball.

 

 

The Hyde Phoenix opened the New Year with a victory over rival North Yarmouth Academy on Wednesday January 4th. The Phoenix started off hot and never looked back, winning with a final score was 61-28.  Tyquan Ekejiuba ’13 had his best performance of the season leading the defensive attack and contributing 10 assists on the offense.  Wilson MacMillan ’14 and Warsame Mohamed ’14 were hot from the outside as they combined for 5 three pointers. Jonah Alexander ’12 had 8 rebounds and 12 points. Mohamed ‘14 led all scorers with 16 points.  Andrew Herron ’14 worked hard off the bench and contributed 6 points. The win gave the Phoenix a record of 3-0 in MPA sanctioned contests

On Thursday January 5th, Hyde hosted Old Orchard Beach.  The teams were evenly matched early.  Hyde maintained an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter led by Chris Moulton ‘12 who hit a couple of jump shots from the foul line.  The Phoenix went into the half with a 10 point lead due to the hot outside shooting of sophomore Wilson MacMillan ’14, who connected on three shots from downtown in the 2nd quarter. Old Orchard came out strong in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Phoenix 15-6 and closing the gap to a one point deficit.  However, the Phoenix broke the game wide open half-way through the 4th quarter with some great perimeter pressure as they extended their half-court trap and went on a 12-0 run led by steals from Warsame Mohamed ‘14 and Tyquan Ekejiuba ’13. The final score was 53-40.  MacMillan ’14 led all scorers with 16 points. Senior Chris Moulton ’12 tallied 11 points and Jonah Alexander ’12 had 13 points.

The Hyde Phoenix pushed their record to 5-0 beating Seacoast Christian 61-18 on Saturday January 7th.  The Phoenix started off with pressure defense switching between a full court press and a half-court trap.  Led by Tyquan Ekejiuba ’13, Warsame Mohamed ’14 and Talin Rowe ’14, the Phoenix forced the visiting Seacoast to early turnovers and went on a 14-2 run to end the first quarter. From this point, they never looked back. Andrew Herron ’13, Conor Ketchum ’12, and Evander Lenardson ’14 contributed solid play off the bench.  Ekejiuba ’13 had seven steals to match his seven points. Herron ’13 had 6 points and 5 rebounds.  Mohamed ’14 led all scorers with 12 points.
