Bath: Phoenix Swimming Week in Review

HYDE SWIMMING BACK IN ACTION AFTER WINTER BREAK

With just one pool practice since returning to Hyde on Wednesday, the awesome and aquatic Phoenix Swimmers dove back into the swing of things at our first meet of 2012, against Portland HS and Waynflete School, last Friday.    Fortunately the swimmers, ever fit, were diligent about their exercise routines over the Holiday Break and many enjoyed new personal records or excelled in new events.

Nearly all of the swimmers participated in four events, the maximum allowed number.  Although competing in so many heats can be a grueling experience, the Phoenix rose to the occasion and spirits remained high throughout the meet, especially in the cheering section at the bottom of each lane.  Some highlights include new swimmers Imani Hiller-Bateau ’15 and Andrew Martz ’14, who both swam in the 50 Freestyle and 200 Freestyle Relay, and are sure to be great additions  to the team.  Jamie McCracken ’12 became the third recipient of the cherished Candy Cane Swimmer Award and the first Phoenix to score the fastest time in an event, narrowly besting his closest competitor with a time of 1:31.37 in the 100 Meter Breaststroke.  Connor Champagne ’13 was less than two seconds away from qualifying for the States Meet in the 100 Meter Butterly with a time of 1:29.08, while Katarina Ellison ’14 and Brian Liu ‘12 both challenged themselves with new events, the 100 Meter Butterfly and 100 Meter Freestyle respectively.   Our men’s 400 Freestyle Relay capped off the exciting night with improved performances from Evan Preece ’12, Connor Champagne ’13, Thomas Pennington ’13, and Ignacio Sanchez ’13. Kudos go out as well to Caroline Hammond, the enthusiastic cheerleader and self-appointed Dean of Team Spirit.

In the coming week we will continue to work on some of our weaknesses in the pool – starts, flip turns, and kicking – while also using pushing our physical fitness and core strength through rigorous daily land practices.  We wish all of our fans a Happy New Year and we hope to see you at our next outing – Friday the 13th (spooky!), 6:30 PM at Thorton Academy in Saco, ME.  Go Phoenix!!
