JV Phoenix Start 2012 Strong
The Men’s JV Basketball team has gotten off to a quick start in this New Year, with two games in our first two days back from break! The team maintained a positive attitude and worked hard in both contests, earning a 1-1 record for the week.
The first game of the week was a quick bus ride down to North Yarmouth to face North Yarmouth Academy. As the first half progressed the Phoenix seemed a little flat, leading to an 8 point NYA advantage after the first half. At halftime, defensive adjustments were made and the Phoenix came on strong in the 3rd quarter, tying the game up as they entered the 4th quarter. Continued pressure defense from the Phoenix led to offensive opportunities and the Phoenix left North Yarmouth with a 10 point victory!
Leading the way in points for the game were Evander Lenardson ’14 and Kiefer Cundy ’15, each scoring in double digits. Solid scoring contributions were also made by Nabil Eshraghian ’13 and Luis Allen ’15. Andrew Kraai ’13 did a nice job collecting rebounds on both defense and offense and Harry Hu ’12 worked hard on both ends of the floor. Every member of the team saw significant minutes on the floor and recognized an area of their game to improve upon.
The following night, the JV Phoenix welcomed Old Orchard Beach to Bath. The Phoenix picked up where they left off the night before, playing their best half of basketball to date! Highlights from this half included Evander Lenardson ’14 connecting on multiple 3 point attempts, Kiefer Cundy ’15 doing a great job distributing the ball and scoring, and William Wu ’15 converting on a shot from the elbow and drawing the foul. The Phoenix entered halftime with an 11 point lead and hungry to finish strong. However, Old Orchard made some adjustments in the second half and refused to go down without a fight. They tied the game with less than 3 minutes to go and a late score held off the Phoenix to secure victory, 49-46.
Although the Phoenix suffered an unfortunate defeat, they seem primed for a great remainder of the winter season! The rest of the week featured practicing offensive execution and working on our pressure defense as well as countering pressure defenses. The team is also working hard, staying positive, and improving their skills on a daily basis. This week is another exciting week for the JV Phoenix as they take on 3 opponents over a 4 day period.
