Hyde School – 21
Portsmouth Abbey – 18
The boys thirds basketball team grinded out a tough overtime win against Portsmouth Abbey this past Wednesday afternoon. Though the offense struggled to put many points on the board in either half, staunch defensive play kept the Wolfpack close throughout the game. Led by Nick Davis ’13, Van Zhou ’13, Dan Kane ’14, and Sam Debassy ’14, the Wolfpack defense created countless turnovers and forced the visiting Portsmouth Abbey players into tough perimeter shots. Debassy came off the bench five minutes into the first half to put the Wolfpack’s first points on the board with a well-taken jump shot.
With the score 10 – 8 in Hyde’s favor to begin the second half, Jack Yan ’14 fueled Hyde’s offensive spurts with penetrating drives into the lane, creating easy baskets for his teammates. A lack of communication on the floor limited the Wolfpack to only eight second-half points, but the team’s struggles were soon to be forgotten after a game-winning 3-point shot made by Tyler Jenkins ’15 in overtime sealed the win. The thirds team will resume play after the winter holiday break looking to improve upon its undefeated 2 – 0 start to the season.
