Lady Phoenix fall to Kent’s Hill in Regular Season Opener
Kent’s Hill 35
Foul trouble and missed free throws cost the Lady Phoenix their first regular-season contest on Monday night. A full court press by the high-energy home team found Hyde scoreless after a rough and tumble first quarter against Kent’s Hill School. This was a physical game from the start and the referees were very active down the stretch, putting both teams to the foul line in double bonus before halftime. Junior point guard Kara Fisher had 14 points and 4 steals. Junior Katie Comeaux had 7 and an impressive 15 rebounds Four of the five starters for Hyde were in foul trouble by the second half; both freshman Jailene Martinez and sophomore Carolyn Moore fouled out in the fourth quarter, leaving Comeaux and Fischer with four fouls apiece at the end of the game. Hyde went into the half down by 10; the score was 11-21. Throughout the contest Hyde took advantage of the physical play by getting themselves to the foul line. Their inability to convert on these shots is ultimately what cost them the game; Hyde made 2 out of 13 attempted free throws, as opposed to Kent’s Hill who went 10-20 from the foul line. There were many highlights as this young team continues to find their stride. Martinez had three steals and two rebounds, as well as a layup in the second quarter. Freshman Susanna McManus saw a lot of playing time in this game and scored her first basket of the season with a shot from the elbow in the fourth quarter. Junior Amy Ginsberg once again turned up the intensity in the second half, getting three blocks and three rebounds. The Lady Phoenix spent time on defensive fundamentals this week, as well as free throws and polishing their offense. They look forward to their first home game on Thursday, December 15th against Isleboro School at 4:00 PM.
