3rd Boys Basketball
Hyde School (1-0): 39
St. Andrews: 23
The boys 3rds basketball team outscored St. Andrews 27-13 in the second half to run away with a win in the first game of the 2011-2012 season. With a score of 12-10 at the half, the tentative play and rusty shooting dissipated immediately as leader Nick Davis ’13 rallied the troops and urged the squad to play hard and have fun. Opening of the second half on a 10-0 run, the difference was a staunch defense by the Wolfpack and superb play by junior starter Apache He ’13. He, a second year international student from Guangdong, China, scored 19 of his career high 22 points in the second half and also led the team with 14 rebounds.
With only a week of practices to prepare for the opening game, the boys embraced learning a 2-3 Syracuse zone defense and ran it to near perfection. Active hands and strong rotations led to multiple steals leaving the St. Andrews team baffled and frustrated throughout the game. Dan Kane and Sam Debessay, both juniors from Upstate New York, were phenomenal coming off the bench. Although only scoring four and two points respectively, their effort propelled the team in the first half with hard work and tenacity when shots weren’t dropping for others. Van Zhao ’13 and Tyler Jenkins ’16 ran the offense and put the team in good positions to score and Jon White ’14 was a rock inside, altering shots and bringing down a flurry of rebounds.
All eleven players that suited up for the game saw action and responded tremendously, despite only having the week to learn an offense and playing together. Ringing the victory bell and meeting in the locker-room after the game, the boys are optimistic for the rest of the season and vocalized the desire to continue working harder in practice and create something special of the 2011-2012 season.
