On Saturday December 3rd, the Varsity Wrestling team traveled across town to compete in the Westlake Tournament held at Bath Middle School. The Phoenix placed 12th in a field of 17 teams with a team score of 36 points and turned in some solid individual performances. Austin Wang’s (’12) work ethic and competitive spirit paid dividends as he notched a 14 second pin and nearly pinned the 4th place winner at 113 pounds before being defeated. Another standout was Max Kaplan (’15) who won his first varsity match when he pinned his Lincoln Academy opponent 32 seconds into the second period.
The Hyde squad had two members climb the podium in the tournament. Chester Hill (’12) found his stride as he went 3-1 on the day and placed 3rd at 152 pounds. The standout performer for the Phoenix was Lukas Fischer (’13) who showed tremendous heart and determination to place 2nd at 182 pounds after going 3-1 on the day. Lukas won his semifinal match in a gutsy and dramatic fashion as he pinned his Skowhegan opponent in double overtime. In the finals, Lukas lost a very tightly contested match as his Mt. Blue opponent scored in the waning seconds of the match. Overall, it was a successful outing for the Hyde wrestlers.
The Phoenix look to continue their progress as they head down to Governor’s Academy in Massachusetts on Friday, December 9th and then to Milton Academy in Massachusetts on Saturday, December 10th.
