The Hyde cross country teams took a long drive up to Hebron Academy to face 19 teams from around New England in the league’s championship race. Coming off of a somewhat disappointing finish in SENE’s the team had their work cut out for them to pull together a positive attitude, refocus, and set their sights on having their best race of the season during this final competition. It was thanks to athletes like Cosmo Hu and Brendan Murray’s stellar performances during SENEs, and renewed commitments from Nick Dresch, Matt Wysocki, and Zack Cerame, that the team was able to dig deep and find the commitment they needed to prepare for this race. With a series of hills called “the wall” at two miles, and a number of other obscenely steep inclines, course times look slow but I assure you these guys ran grueling races.
A healthier, focused, Nick Dresch ’12 lead the charge for the wolf pack with a time of 19:13. After a conservative start Nick fought his way through the 134 man field to find himself in 6th place at the finish of this extremely hilly course. Nick earned All-New England Honors, a medal, and a spot in the NEPTSA All Star Race which will invite the top 20 competitors from each of the four divisions. Zack Cerame 12’ was also back on his game and placed 28th only 25 seconds out from being All New England himself. Brendan Murray ’13 finished the race in 37th place with a time of 20:47. Matt Wysocki ’13, and Cosmo Hu rounded out the scoring 5 for the varsity team placing 42nd and 44th respectively. Marcos Mercado ‘13 and Kevin McMorrow ‘12 were the 6th and 7th runners on the varsity squad placing 70th and 100th. As always the competition was impressive there were a number of very talented runners and tough teams. Our Wolf Pack can take pride in the best team finish Hyde has seen in a long time in this competition. The team finished in 4th place behind Beaver Country Day, Pingree, and Providence Country Day, and took home a plaque to commemorate their performance.
