SENE Semi-Finals

Hyde School – 6

Rocky Hill School – 1

In its most complete performance of the season, the Hyde School Wolf Pack emphatically upset the second-ranked Rocky Hill Mariners 6-1 in East Greenwich, RI.  From the opening whistle, it was clear that the Wolf Pack was determined to avenge an early season loss at the hands of the Mariners back in September.  The Wolf Pack struck first just twelve minutes into the game asWill Davis ’13 received a perfectly slotted through ball from senior tri-captain Nathan Chesley and calmly poked it past Rocky Hill net minder Joe Jordan for the 1-0 advantage.  Just four minutes later, Davis’ counterpart Alvaro Gonzalez ’12 nailed home a loose ball in the box to increase Hyde’s lead to 2-0.  Hyde’s backline of Andreu Cullere ’12, Graham Davidson ’13, Ethan Thoms ’12, and Nasir Ibrahim ’12 helped the Wolf Pack control play for the first twenty minutes of the match.  Midway through the first half, however, the Mariners began to gain some momentum.  With eighteen minutes remaining, the Mariners threaded a nifty through ball that sliced Hyde’s backline, where Rocky Hill’s Kamusu Zean beat Hyde’s Griffin Davidsonoutstretched arms to the far post to narrow the match to 2-1.  The ensuing seventeen minutes saw great physical play and a see-saw battle.  In the closing seconds of the half, Sean Kokdilchipped two Mariner defenders, found himself one-on-one with Joe Jordan and slammed home Hyde’s third goal of the first half to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the halftime chat, the Wolf Pack was determined to seal the victory and advance to the championship on Friday.  Just seven minutes into the second frame, midfielder Nate Chesley made a daring run down the left flank, cut inside and ripped a shot to the far post that bounced off the wood work.  The Mariners could not clear the ball due to the incessant pressure from the Wolf Pack.  Ultimately, the ball landed at the feet of Hyde striker Will Davis where he calmly bent the ball just inside the left post from about twelve yards out to take a 4-1 advantage.  Continued Hyde pressure kept the Mariners on their heels for the remainder of the match.  Chesley created another goal, this time sending fellow senior Dan Weintraub streaking down the right flank where Weintraub slotted his righty shot to the near post to take a 5-1 lead.  With the game in hand, a number of Hyde’s key role players took to the field.  With just seven minutes remaining in the match, central midfielder Jonathan Donesky ’13 sprung midfielder Felipe Azevedo ’14 on a fast break where, after taking on a plethora of Mariner defenders, his run resulted in an own goal against Rocky Hill, giving Hyde its final tally of the day for a 6-1 victory.

Sophomore goal tender Griffin Davidson was stellar in net, stopping seven Mariner shots, one of which was a well-struck penalty kick.  Central midfielders Jonathan Donesky and Sean Kokdil provided steady play up the spine of the field, while the senior leadership of Chesley, Weintraub, Thoms, Ibrahim, and Cullere inspired the team to victory.

At 12-5-1, (10-3 in SENE) the Wolf Pack is in the midst of its finest season in school history.  This also marks the first time the squad will compete in the conference championship.  Hyde will travel to the Wheeler School this Friday, November 11th at 2pm to take on the undefeated, first-seeded Warriors to decide the 2011 SENE Champs. Go Wolf Pack!
