The Hyde Boys XC team took a short trip down the road to neighboring Pomfret School for what proved to be a very memorable meet. When we arrived on this unseasonably cold day, the snow began to fall adding damp and slippery to the list of unfavorable conditions. The guys kept their cool and prepped for a tough race. Energy was high and while there were a few complaints everyone did their best on what is very challenging course filled with hills.
We competed against Pomfret and Rectory in this Tri-meet with each team scoring individually against one another. We won 17-43 over Rectory, a near perfect score, and were edged out by Pomfret 22-33. With Nick Dresch taking a meet off to recoup prior to our SENE championship this coming Friday and Cosmo Hu out for the day, we were missing two of our varsity 7. Zack Cerame ’12 and Matt Wysocki ’13 really stepped it up to try make up for those absences and never let the hills get the best of them. They finished in 3rd and 4th place with times of 20:43 and 21:01 respectively. Given the mile of hills, the slick conditions, and the unbearable cold these were excellent performances. Brendan Murray ’13 seemed to struggle with the conditions but pulled of a 7th place finish. James Howard ’14 also had an excellent race finishing in 10th place with a time of 22:40.
While we fell a little short of Pomfret, and there were no PR’s set, the guys showed incredible grit on the course. They battled the wind, snow, freezing rain and slippery hills to put together a solid performance. They can all be proud of the work they put in and I’m sure this will be a race they never forget!
This week we prepare for our league championship race and set our sights on giving PCD and Williams a run for their money in seeking the top spot. Wish them luck!
