The Hyde Boy’s Cross Country team traveled to the MacDuffie School in Granby MA. to compete against Chase School, Wilbraham and Munson, Cheshire Academy, and Macduffie. After a tough week of training we took the opportunity to sit out a few runners who were dealing with some aches and pains.
Nick Dresch ‘12 rode out a conservative race following the leaders from WMA and overtook the competition in the final stretch finishing first in 18:05. Brendan Murray ’13 and Zach Cerame ‘12took aggressive starts hanging with the lead pack for as long as they could hold up. They finished in 7th and 9th place with times of 18:58 and 19:07 respectively. Typically we would see Kevin McMorrow ’12 and Marcos Mercado ’13 fill out the pack here but Marcos took a day to rest and Kevin had some struggles with his lower back dropping him out of our top five but still finished in a respectable 21:10. Not his fastest race but he toughed it out after a fast start.
It was Matt Wysocki ’13 and James Howard ’14 who stepped up to round out our top 5 finishing 17th and 23rd in 20:03 and 21:05. Tyler Jenkins ‘15 had an excellent race besting his PR by 5 minutes to finish in 24:45. We entered the race knowing we were dealing with the set back of missing two of our top seven and a total of 7 runners out for various reasons, and we were expecting slower races from another two as they dealt with minor injuries. Despite the setbacks they finished 2nd of the 5 teams trailing behind WMA who took 1st.
After the race we dealt with some negative attitudes and less than excellent behavior and discussed a lag in the vocal leadership of some of our team’s leaders. Since then we have seen a renewed commitment from all members of the team and began the week with some difficult practices that were approached with a positive attitude by the athletes.
We will be traveling to Marianapolis this Saturday to compete against Marianapolis, Worcester Academy, St Thomas More, and others. Wish them luck!
