Tough Loss to Wheeler for Wolfpack BVS

September 24, 2011

Wheeler – 1
Hyde – 0

On a swelteringly hot and humid afternoon in late September, the Hyde Wolfpack could not find the equalizer in the waning seconds of the match and lost to a very talented Wheeler Warriors squad 1-0.  Wheeler’s field, drenched from the previous days rain, made the pitch difficult to manage and judge.  Slipping and sliding in some parts, with the ball skipping or stopping dead in others, the Wolfpack seemed tentative at first.  Sophomore netminder Griffin Davidson helped keep the match scoreless with daring saves coming off his line and routinely picking crosses out of the air.  The Wolfpack’s best scoring chance in the first half came off a set piece.  Taken down about ten yards out of the corner of the eighteen yard box, Alvaro Gonzalez ’12 bent a perfectly place ball to the far post to fellow senior Nate Chesley who just narrowly put the ball over the cross bar with his head.  Both teams headed into the halftime break at 0.

The second half showed some better possession and greater composure from Hyde.  Midfielders Sean Kokdil ’13, Dan Weintraub ’12, and Richard Schuller ’12 provided a steady balance on the offensive and defensive end of the field.  Despite a number of scoring opportunities, the Wolfpack struggled to score.  Wheeler broke the scoreless deadlock with nineteen minutes remaining in the match when the caught the Wolfpack defense in transition.  The Warriors placed a perfect cross into the box that beat Davidson to the near post.  Not to be outdone, the Wolfpack mounted a number of late scoring chances, the best of which came with just under ten minutes left.  About 25 yards from net, midfielder Nate Chesley slotted a perfect through ball onto the stride of striker Alvaro Gonzalez who hit the ball cleanly, but the Wheeler goaltender made a fingertip save, pushing the ball over the end line for a corner kick.  Davidson finished a stellar day with 14 saves.

Although the Wolfpack lost 1-0, it is clear that the team can compete with the best teams in the SENE.  At 2-3, the Wolfpack hosts SENE foe St. Thomas More on Monday, September 26th at 4pm.
