Hyde Boy’s XC @ Canterbury Invitational
On my favorite kind of day for XC the boy’s traveled to Canterbury School to compete against many of the teams from Div III and Div IV in NEPSTA. It was muddy and wet throughout the very hilly course, runners slipped and slid around (in some cases through) corners. Shoes were lost in ankle deep muck and the day ended with everyone coated with mud and wet from splashing through the fields. Despite all of the very valiant efforts of the Canterbury athletic department the course was wet, slick, and slow going for most. In total our race contained 19 teams and 126 runners and we measured up pretty nicely. 7th place as a team is certainly something to proud of when competing against heavy hitters like Greens Farms (average time 18:10, first place finisher overall 16:40). Nick Dresch 12’ made a further statement to the NEPSTA XC community by placing 10th overall against some excellent competition from DIII and DIV.Brendan Murray ’13 and Zack Cerame ’12 did not hit their best times but put in a valiant effort to finish 34th and 44th in a race with a very dense mid-pack. As a team we learned that we need to hit the hills in practice more frequently, and that we can compete at a high level at New England’s this year. We continued to trail SENE rival Williams by only a few points and were just edged out by our neighbor Pomfret who beat us by 3 points.
We’ll have another chance to chase both Pomfret and Williams on Wednesday at the Marianapolis Invitational. The guys put in a grueling workout today and will be working to recover in time to be a presence at this next event. Wish them luck and remind them to drink water and rest up!
