Bath: Phoenix Football Week in Review

Phoenix Football Season Begins with Scrimmage

This past Saturday, the Phoenix Football team headed north to Kent’s Hill for an afternoon of scrimmages. Fellow opponents from the Evergreen League included Kent’s Hill, Hebron, and Hyde-Woodstock. These young men were fired up for some live action and were eager to display what they had learned in the 3 weeks since preseason. It was a beautiful late summer afternoon at Kent’s Hill and a great day for football!

The scrimmage began with a game against our sister school, Hyde-Woodstock. The format consisted of each team running 10 plays and then alternating possession. The Phoenix started on defense. Led by their linebackers they did a good job slowing down the Wolfpack offense. The Phoenix offense moved the ball well, with the offensive line getting a good push on Woodstock’s defense. Tyquan Ekejiuba ’13 had a nice reception and Bemnet Banks ’12 had a solid run. After alternating a few times, some new additions to the Phoenix family got an opportunity to see some action for the first time in their careers. On offense and defense, there were significant measures of growth these young men had made.

After an hour of play against Woodstock, The Phoenix squad assembled for a full half of action against Hebron Academy. The Phoenix again started on defense and looked strong coming out, forcing Hebron to punt. Defensive tackle Lukas Fischer ’13 made his presence known throughout the afternoon in the Hebron backfield. Also, Jack Peters ’12 recorded his first career interception against Hebron. The offense proceeded to move the ball with reasonable success, but couldn’t seem to find the end zone. Also, the Phoenix offense struggled with a few costly turnovers. When time ran out our second team lined up against Hebron’s second team. Harry Hu ’12 was a standout at linebacker and Omar Harris ’14 had some strong runs on offense.

Overall, it was a great day for Phoenix football. The team played hard, had positive learning attitudes, and recognized areas to improve upon this week in practice. This Saturday marks the season opener for the Phoenix as they face off against Tilton School. The game promises to be fast paced and action packed. Hope to see you there!
