Hyde-Bath Track vs. Hyde Woodstock (April 6, 2011)

The men’s and women’s track teams traveled to its sister school Hyde-Woodstock for their opening track meet of the year.  We took 50 athletes to the meet and for roughly forty of them, this was their first-ever track and field competition.

It was a beautiful day for a track meet (rain and snow-free finally) and I was pleased with our performance and competitive spirit.  Both meets proved to be very competitive with Hyde-Bath falling just short of both men’s and women’s victories.  Meet scores are below and individual performances attached (separate tabs for men and women).

Women’s Meet:

Hyde-Woodstock          64

Hyde-Bath                    61

Given our lack of time in preparing for many of the field events leading up to the meet, I was pleased with the attitude and effort of the women.  Senior Lily Smith `11 won both the shot put and discus with decent early season throws of 20’ and 76’ respectively.  Lily also grabbed a third place for us in the javelin (59′ 2″).  Katie Comeaux `13 in her first-ever meet won the javelin event (69′ 11″) and placed second in the shot put (19’ 5”).  Also in her first ever track meet, Mady Preece `13 won the 400m (1:22.0) and place second in the 200m (33.12).  Senor Jessie Zhao `11 surprised s all with a victory in the 1500m (6:55.30).  The women’s 4x400m relay team ran away with a solid victory at the end of the meet (5:20.76… Mady Preece `13, Emeline Ferguson `11, Dexie Cercos `12, and Lily Smith `11).  Other notable performances were Dexie Cercos `12… second in the 100m hurdles, javelin, and 300m hurdles.  Emeline Ferguson `11 grabbed third place finishes in the 100m, the 100m HH and the 300m hurdles. Kayla Derby `11… second in both the 1500m and 3000m.  Also placing for us were Yan Chen `12 in the shot put, Weina Kong `12 in the discus, Valeria DiGregorio `13 in the discus, and Carrie Basch `13 in the 3000m.

Men’s Meet:

Hyde-Woodstock          70

Hyde-Bath                    66

Men’s highlights included Wes Freston `11 with commanding victories in the 100m (11.67) and the 20m (23.26).  Wes also placed third in the high jump.  Zachary Betancourt `12 won the 3000m (10:59.28) and placed second in the 1500m (5:05.07).  Chris Moulton `12 began the season with a 131′ 8½” winning toss in the javelin.  Senior Kevin Ou `11 won the triple jump (33’ 7”), placed second in the 110m HH (20.64), and placed third in the 300m hurdles (52.27).  Rounding out our victories on the day were Ross Klumac `11 in the 300m hurdles, as well as both men’s relay teams (4x100m and 4x400m).  Other notable performances and scorers were Ryan Scioli `12 with a second place finish in the discus and third place finish in the shot put… Evan Preece `12 with a third place javelin finish… Jack Xu `14 with second place in the triple jump and a third place in the long jump… Nero Chai `11 with a third in the 400m… Isaac Preston `13 with second place finishes in both the 800m and 3000m… and John Garvey `11 with third place finishes in the 1500m and 3000m.
