Wolfpack Wrestlers Strong in Deerfield Quad Meet

Hyde-Woodstock: 45
Hyde-Bath: 25

This Saturday, the Hyde Wolf Pack Varsity wrestlers traveled to Deerfield Academy to face off against their sister school from Bath, Phillips-Andover, and the host school.  We were lucky to face off against the Hyde Phoenix wrestlers first, allowing for us to be fresh for our favorite rivalry of the season.  The Wolf Pack was more than prepared to take it to their northern counterpart, and really wrestled tough from start to finish.  We started off at the 160lb weight class and Addison Wheat ’11 broke his losing streak with a pin against Zayd Atkinson in the first minute of the match.  James Ziede ’12 bumped up a weight class, wrestling at 171lbs, and won his match with 4-3 decision againstChester Hill. At the 189lb, Zack Guidice ’12 lost a close match to Anthony Callahan in a 1-5 decision.  Brian Sanz ’11 stepped up for his match at the 215lb weight class, and turned a losing match into a quick pin in 2nd period.  Jae Kang Lee ’12 quickly dispatched of his opponent at the 130lb weight class with a 23 second pin.  Matt Wysocki ’12 wrestled hard all 6 minutes, but lost in a 1-12 decision. This was followed by pins from Kenrick Vincent ’12 and Mac McGuire ’11. One thing to note about this match up was the fact that we only gave up one pin for the day, and the other 2 matches we lost were by decision.  This was tough, gritty wrestling and displayed the best of our team. The excitement on the team was contagious, and carried through to the next match against Deerfield Academy.

Our second match of the day was against the host school, Deerfield Academy.  Last year, Deerfield defeated the Wolf Pack 18-66 in a very lopsided match-up, but this year the scales were tipped in Hyde’s favor.  Deerfield gave up 24pts in unanswered forfeits, which gave our team quite an advantage from the onset, but this did not mean that the Wolf Pack rested on their laurels and claimed a victory without a fight.  Addison Wheat ’11 continued on his winning streak with another pin and Zach Guidice ’12 had a turn-around match to pin his opponent at the 189lb weight class.  Mac McGuire ’11 won another match with a pin in the second period.  Of the 5 matches we wrestled, Hyde won 3 and Deerfield won 2, legitimizing our win without the use of forfeits.  With a 2-0 record for the day, we looked to our final match against the #3 ranked team in the Class A’s, Phillips-Andover.

Hyde-Woodstock: 18
Phillips-Andover: 58

Our final match was to be our hardest, seeing as Phillips Andover has historically been one of the toughest in the league.  The deficit of skill was to our disadvantage in the match ups, and several wrestlers fought valiantly but fell by pins.  Zack Guidice ’12 and Brian Sanz ’11 fought hard into the 3rd period, and Mac McGuire ’11 went the distance with the #1 ranked contender in New England, only losing by 8pts.  The two highlights of the day were Jae Kang Lee ’12 and Marcos Mercado ’13 who earned pins against their opponents.  Mercado was lined up against a very tough opponent who had bumped up a weight class for a challenge.  The match was high energy and the score was very close up to the last 20 seconds of the 3rd period.  With a lead of 2pts, Marcos was taken down, hit a reversal and was reversed himself.  As the buzzer sounded, the score was tied at 18-18.  With one minute on the clock, Marcos had to be the first to get a takedown.  He proved to be a clutch athlete and stepped up to not only takedown, but pin his very challenging opponent.  This video will be shared at our next morning meeting.  We left the day proud of our toughness, focus, and sportsmanship.  As the season has progressed, the Wolf Pack grapplers have formed bonds that were built upon the sweat and toil of practice, the support from the mat-side, and the success and defeats they faced together this season.  We will have two home matches and our first big tournament in this upcoming week.  We will host Choate on Monday, Marianapolis on Wednesday, and travel to the Brunswick School for their annual tournament on Saturday.  Please come by and show your support, or wish these men luck when you see them!

Thanks,

Coach Jenkins
