The boys varsity basketball team traveled to Bath, Maine for the Annual James Roman Basketball Tournament this weekend and came away with two wins. On Friday night, Hyde Woodstock defeated Kent Hill School 53-40. Hyde was lead by senior guard Mike Cannon ’11 with 21 points and newcomer sophomore guard Jahvaney Beckford ’13 with 20 points in scoring. Evan Dienstag ’12 and Jalen Hall ’11 played very strong inside and rebounded very well. Other notable players were Derek Kubitz ’, Justen Wilson ’11 and Zack Cerame ’12. With several turnovers and fouls, it was not a pretty game to watch; however, the players settled themselves down and worked together to pull out the victory. Developing their ball-playing skills will be a challenge for this year’s team; however, they work very hard, have lots of enthusiasm and play together very well. These characteristics will make for a very exciting season.
In the Saturday afternoon game, Hyde Woodstock was up against our sister school Hyde Bath. The Wolfpack prevailed with the victory, 48 – 46. It was a hard fought game right down to the end. The Wolfpack was lead by Jalen Hill ’11, with 11 points in the first half, and also by the hard nose defensive play of Jahvaney Beckford ’13’ and Mike Cannon ’11. In the second half the Wolfpack was lifted with some exciting play and scoring from Derek Kubitz ’11, who finished with 12 points, and our early season team leading score had 9 points for the game. This game came down to the wire with both teams trading baskets but the Wolfpack had the final run.
