SENE Championship Nov 5th 2010
The Hyde Boys and Girls Cross Country teams participated in the Southeastern New England league championship on Friday, November 5th. Held at the Wheeler School, the teams faced a flat, grassy course and hoped to run their best race of the season.
The girls team went out ready to run and full of nervous energy. Lori Allen ’11 was the star of the day for the girls, placing 12th overall and earning herself a medal as an all-SENE runner. She was followed by strong performances from Laura Leonard ’11, Barbara Zimmer ’11, and Alexis Holdampf ’12, all of whom came in under 25:30. Rounding out Hyde’s top five girls, Gabby Bergeron ’14 truly put her heart into the race, finishing with a strong kick and great cheering from her teammates. Although the team finished 5th out of five teams, the girls left with a sense of accomplishment and a pride in the effort they put in.
The boys team put in a hard effort as well at the SENE race. Tucker Mara ’11 led the way for the boys team, finishing in 19:52, and was followed soon after by Matt Wysocki ’13, Mac McGuire ’11, Addison Wheat ’11, and Zack Cerame ’12, all of whom finished before the clock even hit 21 minutes. The boys put their all into the course, but struggled to attain the results desired; they ended up coming in 5th overall out of seven scoring teams.
NEPSTA Div IV Championship Nov 16th 2010
The Hyde Boys and Girls Cross Country teams traveled to our sister school in Bath, ME to compete in the NEPTSTA Division IV Cross Country Championship. Both teams faced fierce competition from teams from all over the region. The mighty Greens Farms Academy won on the boys’ side with 7 of their runners in the top 15 for the third year running. Our boys comprised of Mac McGuire ’11, Tucker Mara ’11, Addison Wheat ’11, Zack Cerame ’12, Kenrick Vincent ‘12 and Matt Wyscoki ’13 placed 12th out of 14 teams, beating out Cheshire Academy and most importantly our friendly rivals at Hyde-Bath. There were no PR’s set on the muddy and treacherous course, but each of our athletes put forth an excellent effort.
The girls team, which consisted of Laura Leonard ’11, Lori Allen ’11, Barbara Zimmer ’11, Julia Biederman ’12, Sam Sallarulo’13, Gabby Bergeron ’14, and Katie Mehiel ’14, finished 13th out of 14 teams, edging out Hyde-Bath. Laura Leonard navigated the hilly and slippery course in 25:27 with Lori Allen just behind her in 25:55; no personal records were set there, but given the course and its condition both were very respectable times.
The meet brought our season to a close. While we have had our struggles individually and as teams, I think I can speak for everyone in saying overall there was a tremendous amount of growth on both teams this fall. Some of us will graduate and may not run competitively again, and some will be back next year, but hopefully all will remember the 2010 Hyde Cross Country season fondly.
