Pomfret School – 4
Hyde School – 1
In a local battle of Route 169, the Hyde School Wolfpack were out-matched and out-played by a talented Pomfret School squad 4-1. The Wolfpack held the skilled Griffins scoreless for the first 38 minutes of the match. Wolfpack standouts during this period were goal tender Brian Sanz ’11, whose composure and fearlessness in net were impressive and central backs Ethan Thoms ’12 and Graham Davidson ’13 consistently turned away Pomfret scoring opportunities. The primary place where the Wolfpack appeared vulnerable was air balls, where Hyde seemed tentative against Pomfret’s tenacity. With seven minutes remaining in the first half, the Griffins capitalized on this weakness in the Wolfpack defense. Pomfret’s junior midfielder Jack Nicholson made a nifty run down the right flank and sent a perfectly bent ball onto the head of striker Dave St. Lawrence for the first of his three goals on the day for a 1-0 Griffin advantage. Just four minutes later, St. Lawrence struck again when he toe poked a shot just past the outstretched arms of Sanz to up the Pomfret lead to 2-0 heading into the half.
St. Lawrence finished his hat trick seventeen minutes into the second frame as he drove a header into the bottom left corner off a beautifully driven corner kick. Pomfret would add another goal just three minutes later to finish their scoring at 4. Never one to quit, however, Hyde striker Henry Killeen ’11 took on two Griffin defenders and ripped a 25 yard shot just under the crossbar to put Hyde on the scoreboard. Other strong Wolfpack performances were turned in by outside midfielders Adam Carreau ’11 and Jae Kang Lee ’14, whose work rate and effort were palpable throughout the afternoon.
Standing at 2-6-3, Hyde hosts local rival Putnam Science Academy this Saturday, October 23 at 3pm on the Grant Field.
