Saturday, September 18 @ PAS

Boys’ Scores: PCD-26, PAS-35, MPS-71, Hyde-92, STM-155

Girls’ Scores: PAS-36, Lincoln-59, MPS-81, Hyde-91, PCD-114

The Hyde Boys and Girls Cross Country teams traveled to Portsmouth Abbey School this past Saturday for their first invitational meet of the season.  Other teams in attendance included Providence Country Day School, Marianapolis, Saint Thomas More, Lincoln, and the host school, Portsmouth Abbey. Both Boys and Girls’ teams placed fourth out of five schools, with nearly identical team scores.

Standouts from the Girls’ team included seniors Laura Leonard ’11, and Lori Allen ’11, who maintained a strong pace and placed tenth and eleventh, respectively.  Newcomers Sam Sallarulo ’13, Gabby Bergeron ’14, and Katie Mehiel ’14 all put in great effort as well.  After experiencing their first meet, the girls made a commitment to work harder and to support one another, both as individuals and as a team.

The Boys Cross Country team also had some standouts.  Placing tenth overall, senior Mac McGuire ’11 modeled hard work, perseverance, and grit for first-year teammates Tucker Mara ’11 and Chad Bryant ’13, who were not far behind. Another solid start came from junior Zack Cerame ’12, who ran the 3.1 miles in 23:23; Zack is just one of several runners who stands to shed minutes from his time as the season progresses.

As both teams look ahead to the rest of the season, one overarching theme is courage: courage to be better, faster, and stronger; courage to stretch one’s arms, legs, and lungs beyond their expected limits; courage to beat the other runners in that last sprint to the finish line, and, most importantly, to triumph over that inner adversity that says “I can’t.”
