At Hyde School
Hyde School – 0
Wheeler School – 6
It was a tough day for the Hyde School Girls Varsity Soccer Team, facing perennial New England powerhouse Wheeler School Tuesday September 14 at home. After a great showing last Friday, the WolfPack found its team dwindled to just eight players due to a myriad of obstacles facing the team. Nonetheless, the remaining core of players rallied the bulk of the junior varsity players to provide a contest for the Wheeler team.
As strong as ever, Wheeler moved the ball seamlessly throughout the game, controlling play and showcasing great team work. Even with Caitlyn Colley ’11, Hope Eldridge ’11, Gillian Weintraub ’12, and Marcy Altobello ’13 stepping into new defensive roles with heart and grit, Wheeler was able to garner four goals in the first half; Hannah Broderick scoring the first and third goals of the game, Julia Rice with the second, and Alex Strong rounding out the first forty minutes of play with a goal at 3:29 remaining on the clock. The second half of play saw much of the same control from Wheeler with goals from Gabby L’Archevesque with 33:04 remaining in the game and Nicole Evangelista, who took on multiple defenders to earn her goal with 26:07 remaining in the game.
Though this display juxtaposed the earlier Hyde contest, the team saw great leadership and determination from the players who competed. Gabi Caro ’13 was fearless in the midfield, able to generate and support forward momentum for the WolfPack. Most notably, Mari Barnett ’11 led the team with her composure and elevated her level of play throughout the entire field. Similarly, Lara Cornelius ’11epitomized determination as goal keeper, earning 14 saves.
Falling to 1-1 on the season, Hyde looks for a more favorable showing and team reunion, facing MacDuffie School Saturday September 18 in Springfield, MA.
