Lydell enrolled at Hyde as a student-athlete from The Boy’s Club of New York and was followed by brother Ronald ’98. Lydell was a gifted basketball player upon arrival at Hyde. (Note: Lydell continues to play the highest level ball at multiple gyms and playgrounds throughout NYC.) However, Lydell distinguished himself in study, sport and spirit to become one of the most respected leaders in the student body. He went on to Springfield College where he was a two-time captain of the basketball team, graduating with a B.S. in sports management. During his final season at Springfield, his coach said, “Lydell is our leader. There may be games when he might not lead us in stats, but he always leads us in stature.”
As dean of its middle school, Lydell was instrumental in helping launch Hyde’s public charter school initiative in the South Bronx. As one colleague noted, “Every morning since his arrival at the charter school in Hunt’s Point, a neighborhood in the poorest Congressional
district in the country, Lydell stands in the doorway to greet every student with a
welcoming smile and a firm handshake.”
Today, Lydell Capers ’97 serves as dean of students at The Lion Charter School in Bronx, NY. However, one career just does not seem to be enough for Lydell. Pursuing his own unique potential led him to launch Ly Stay Fly, which he describes as a unique and inexpensive clothing line allowing individuals to acquire products inspired by their own creative minds. He explains, “They come up with the ideas and I make them come to life.”
His nominator writes, “Lydell is a model of integrity whose actions match his beliefs.” Lydell and his wife Tynesia are the parents of a son and daughter and live in New York City
