The school's athletic programs are designed to cater to all skill levels, encouraging both participation and excellence. A recent article by Diane Belcher of Harvard Business Publishing stated, "... that organizations with leaders who achieve high character scores have an average return on assets five times higher than those with low character scores.” This underscores that having leaders of character is not just a nice bonus for a company; it directly impacts all organizations and families. Similarly, a survey conducted by the American Journal of Business Education found that 71% of employers surveyed listed honesty and integrity as the most important qualities in new hires. While the list of sought-after skills and abilities can be debated, the importance of having leaders and employees of character is essential. The question then is how to find good people of solid character. Fortunately, although a bit counterintuitive, studies show that character is not simply something a person is born with; it can be taught and learned. Character education has been at the heart of Hyde’s teaching methodology since its founding in 1966 and is collectively known as the Discovery Process. Grounded in the nationally recognized CASEL standards, Hyde’s approach to character development is both intentional and focused. Throughout the course of the year, faculty-led Discovery Groups explore the importance of courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity, destiny, humility, conscience, truth, and concern for others. Within these “Discovery Groups,” students discuss, debate, read, write, and wrestle with what it means to be a person of character and why achieving that goal is essential for personal success and happiness.

The dormitories are supervised by residential staff who create a nurturing atmosphere, ensuring that students feel at home. Residential life is filled with activities and events that promote personal growth, cultural understanding, and fun. Through shared living experiences, students learn valuable life skills such as time management, conflict resolution, and cooperation.
The Performing Arts program at Hyde School is a vibrant and dynamic aspect of campus life. It offers students the opportunity to explore and develop their talents in music, theater, and dance. Hyde’s state-of-the-art facilities provide the perfect setting for students to engage in creative expression and performance. The program emphasizes the importance of discipline, collaboration, and artistic expression, helping students to grow both as artists and individuals.
Parenting is hard! Hyde’s Family Education includes both Family Weekends and Family Learning Conferences. At the heart of the family curriculum is the belief that effective communication, honest reflection, introspection, and the ability to openly share one's thoughts and feelings create the best environment for family connections and growth.During both the Family Weekends and the Learning Conferences, parents attend small group workshops with their children. Each workshop is designed to generate discussions and reflection on the important questions, goals, dilemmas, and challenges that confront both parents and students on a daily basis. Students and their parents interact with each other, other parents, and students in group conversations that can be heartwarming, emotional, and encouraging. The ultimate goal is open, honest, constructive dialogue. Parenting can indeed be hard, but it is absolutely doable, and it is never too late.
Building self-confidence and poise is an essential component of Hyde’s leadership curriculum, and there are few skills that enhance a person's self-confidence more than public speaking. Every Saturday morning after brunch, Head of School Laura Gauld teaches a public speaking class for the entire student body. Students learn about the importance of articulation, voice control, projection, eye contact, and body language throughout the year. Ultimately, after a lot of practice, every Hyde graduate gives a two to three-minute speech at their own graduation. The self-confidence, pride, and poise demonstrated by all of our students when they address the graduation crowd are truly remarkable.
