International Experience at Hyde

Hyde School has welcomed international students for more than two decades, and they are one of the defining features of our community. Students from across Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America arrive each year not to observe American high school life from the outside, but to participate in it fully.

At Hyde, international students have an American roommate. They compete in three seasons of athletics. They stand up and speak in front of their peers. They join the same Discovery Groups and leadership programs as every other student. The immersive model is intentional: we believe that growth happens through participation, not observation.

Hyde's international graduates consistently report that their time here gave them skills that no language course or test-prep program could provide: the confidence to communicate clearly, the ability to build relationships across cultural differences, and the personal foundation to navigate college and life in a new country.

What international families need to know:

— Hyde students are immersed from day one. There is no separate international track or program.

— All students participate in athletics, public speaking, and all school programming.

Information

English Language Learner (ELL) Support

Hyde's English Language Learner program helps non-native English speakers build the skills they need to succeed both in the classroom and in daily life. Students work in small groups to strengthen listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while expanding academic vocabulary and improving grammar. The program takes a structured approach to language development and also explores history, cultural awareness, and the practical English needed to thrive in an American college environment.

Students in our ELL program will:

Build confidence in academic and social communication.
Strengthen reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English.
Expand vocabulary and improve grammar in context.
Develop the cultural fluency to participate fully in American college life.

Student Life

Life at Hyde

Life at Hyde is about more than academics. It is about community, shared challenge, and the kind of friendships that form when people from very different backgrounds are all working toward the same things.

International students at Hyde have an American roommate by design. Dorm life, shared meals, athletic practices, and weekend trips are all part of the program, and all of them are opportunities to practice English, build relationships, and become part of something larger than yourself.

Some activities our international students have loved most:

Skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain, one of the largest ski resorts in the Northeast.
Beach trips along the coast of Midcoast Maine.
Roller skating in Portland.
Community service and leadership projects throughout the academic year.
