The Digital Arts Heads to the Great Outdoors, by Zach Birnbaum '11 and Liz Rhaney

On October 30th, students from Mr. Birnbaum '11 and Ms. Rhaney's Creative Design, Media Production, and Photography & Animation classes took part in an Academic Intensive at Bald Head Trail in Arrowsic, Maine. The goal of the trip was to capture the essence and spirit of the natural landscape through photography, video, and sound. Students explored the trail’s shifting terrain, from wooded paths to open marshes, seeking to tell the story of the space through creative media.

Over the course of the day, students documented the rich variety of the environment, experimenting with visual composition, camera movement, and ambient sound. Each class approached the experience from a unique perspective: Photography and Animation students focused on lighting, framing, and visual rhythm; Media Production students recorded video footage and natural soundscapes; and Creative Design students envisioned how these elements could be woven together to communicate mood and meaning. The work collected will be used to produce a digital walkthrough gallery, allowing viewers to experience Bald Head Trail virtually, complete with visuals, sounds, and the immersive atmosphere of the site.

The Academic Intensive program, led by Megan Mack Nicholson, Hyde’s Director of Outdoor Education, provides opportunities for experiential learning outside the classroom. These trips encourage students to connect their academic studies to the natural world while developing teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Intensives have included subjects ranging from AP U.S. History to Environmental Science, each using Maine’s natural landscapes as an extension of the learning environment. The school’s Lennox Outdoor Leadership Center in Eustis, Maine, also serves as a frequent destination for these immersive experiences.
