MLK Day at Hyde has always been about a day of learning and not a day off. Over the last few years, it has also been the kick-off for our winter term focus on the PACE (People are Created Equal) Project. The focus of this learning is to stay away from buzzwords and agendas and help all of us to:
- Learn more about ourselves and each other's backgrounds.
- Be the change that we want to see in the world.
- Connect our learning to a character framework.
On Monday, we started off the day by learning about Dr. King's journey from history teacher Shaw Bridges. Then each Discovery group spent the morning viewing a film, such as Glory Road, Selma, Freedom Writers, and Hidden Figures. At our school meeting, students got up to talk about the films and share the lessons learned from them. As one student said, "I learned today that we are more than a stereotype and ultimately it is up to us to decide who we want to be."
It was full week with much learning. While there are always challenges, when we come together to learn from each other, we all benefit. As Dr. King said,
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that."
