My name is Ruth Molina Gracia and I am one of the dorm moms of the girls in Deck House. In one of our morning meetings, I asked the girls if there was something special they wanted to do the following weekend since I was on duty. They did not even need a minute to think about it and out of all the things they could have chosen to do, they asked me if we could possibly make cookies for John. I already knew these kids were special, but this just proved it even more.
Alivia ‘25, one of our senior students from Maine, came up with the idea. Everyone else was happy to do so and supported the idea. When I asked her why she wanted to make cookies for him she told me, “he does so much for us. Not only does he clean, but he is the sweetest soul. We love John!”.
We gathered a group of about ten kids that went to Mrs. Gauld’s house (head of the school) to bake cookies and write a sweet note to him. Helena ‘25, a senior from Serbia that helped making the cooking wrote the following about John:
“When it comes to Mr. John Wise, his last name says it all. He is a very wise, empathetic and kind person. Whenever I have some free time to talk to John I do and everything he says has a deeper meaning behind it. He gives great advice and motivates all students to go after their goals. The cookies we made for him represent just a small part of all the love he deserves and we are very lucky to have him in our community!”
Even if some students were out of town and some others could not join, the whole school had a reason to give them to him and felt a part of it. Both the note and the cookies were given to him on Monday during our school meeting. Students were standing up clapping and cheering for him. He was surprised and thankful at the same time. Afterwards he sent an email to the whole school with the following words:
“Well, to say I was surprised at your wonderful acknowledgment would be an understatement. As some of you know I am rarely at a loss for words, but this occasion proved the exception to the rule. How truly grateful I am only scratches the surface of how I feel. You have shown me what those five words on the rock out front really mean. I am blessed to have you all in my life.” - John, Hyde Facilities Staff
