Dinner With The Founder

Hyde's Founder, Joseph Gauld, has formally retired from his teaching roles at the school, yet he is seen around the campus taking walks or enjoying one of his favorite activities, a Hyde soccer or basketball game.

This week, some members of Hyde's Wolfpac Council met at the Head's House to have dinner with the Founder. It was a lively evening with lots of laughter, stories, and meaningful conversation. Each student talked about the challenges they are working on when it comes to their leadership roles within the school and about what they were learning. Then Joey asked them to share what we needed to do to improve the school community.

Joey shared the founding story and the challenges he encountered while working to found a school based on the concept of Unique Potential. He started out by trying to build that vision in an established school, but he quickly learned that he was envisioning a shift that went far beyond the traditional focus on academic performance and innate abilities. As he said to the students, "I remember what I felt like as a kid and believed that the educational system did not honor the deeper aspects of a student's full potential. I thought we could do better than what we were doing for kids. I didn't know if it would work, but I wanted to try. I found this property in Maine and knew it would be an amazing place for a school. Unfortunately, I didn't have the finances to make it happen. I tried three times and got rejected each time. Finally, I decided to try one more time. The local community joined me, and we procured the Hyde mansion." Stories were also shared about how the five character words were chosen and about important moments in the school's history.

Each student shared something that they were learning from their Hyde experience. Examples included:

  • I have learned to have an open mindset and change the way I approach new challenges.
  • I have been able to have difficult conversations, and I was not able to do that before coming here.
  • Speaking in front of other people was always a challenge for me in settings that were not sports related. I have found my voice in other areas.
  • I have learned to handle myself with confidence and how to be more patient.
  • Getting used to getting out of my comfort zone in order to grow has been a real lesson for me.
  • Hyde has been an opportunity for me to grow into a more assertive person who isn't afraid to speak her mind.

Joey was excited about meeting with the students. As he said at the end of the evening, "The students were impressive and there was a deeper maturity that I saw in them. It was great to hear their thoughts about what they were experiencing as well as their ideas for making their great school even stronger."

For me, it was an important reminder that it doesn't matter if we are 95, 65, or 17. We can connect when we share our deeper selves with each other.
