Principles are our Rock
This week, the senior and junior classes went to Hyde's Lennox Outdoor Leadership Center campus in Eustis, Maine, for end-of-year retreats. I spent a day with the class of 2023 and was inspired by their activities, which included:
While the students did have their cell phones, there were plenty of times when they put them away to focus on serious discussions and just pure fun without screen distractions. In one of the seminar activities, we discussed the "rocks" that can weigh us down in life. Examples cited were:
We discussed how these "rocks" get collected and how we can always choose to put them down. Then we shared the "rocks" we chose for our strengths. These symbolize the power of our core values and principles. Examples cited were:
Each person talked about the key principles that were their "rock" and also received feedback from the group about what they stood for and the example they set for others. It was powerful to both listen and share with the seniors, as we were truly talking on an adult-to-adult level. I learned that one of my strengths is an indomitable optimism and a "rock" that I can put down is believing that it is all up to me. I was also reminded that I am a better person when I trust the group and allow myself to be part of the collective conscience about taking the next right step.

End of Year School Departure Information |
As we begin to wrap up the last term, the Dean's area wanted to send out important information regarding the end of the school year.
Just like the beginning of the school year, Hyde does not provide transportation for the end of school year to students to airports, bus stations, etc. Parents are responsible for making departure plans. Parents within driving distance are encouraged to come to campus to pick up their student(s) so their belongings can be taken home. If your student is returning to campus in the fall, we do offer on-campus storage for large belongings.
Mail it 4U is a local business that the school uses to ship items. This is a one-stop-shop for shipping that includes USPS, FedEx, UPS and DHL. Below is a link to their website, and a PDF document parents can fill out and send over to Sydney Wall in the Dean's or directly to the business.
Click here for the Mail It 4U website
All travel plans must be communicated to the Dean's Office or to your student's Discovery Group Leader as soon as possible. Please include departure times, flight numbers, etc. If you plan to pick up your student, please let us know your approximate arrival time to campus as this is extremely helpful to have in order to assist with your student's check-out from campus.
We are asking all students to stay through the Graduation Ceremony at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 27th, and would love for parents to join us for this special event. If you would like to join us for the ceremony, please let us know. Immediately following Graduation, there will be a light lunch available in the Dining Hall. Dorm parents will be available to inspect your student's room and clear them to depart for summer break. The estimated time that students can depart from campus is 2:00 PM. Please keep this in mind when planning.
We are asking that students refrain from using Hyde's address as of Wednesday, May 17th. Any packages that are received after the end of the school year will be sent back to the sender.
If you have any other questions or concerns about the end of the year, please feel free to reach out to Sydney Wall in the Dean's Area. |
