A student once said to me, "At Hyde leadership is required, Leadership of self as well as leadership in a group." As one of the school's founding words, "Leadership" is regularly discussed, encouraged, and assessed. Group leadership is easier to see than inner leadership, which Hyde develops by asking each student to
- Build Self-Awareness
- Grow Public Speaking Confidence
- Tackle Challenges Outside of Their Comfort Zone
- Develop Meaningful Relationships
- Understand Their Family Context
Just as every individual is unique, each student is encouraged to develop their leadership style, but it all begins with setting a personal example of honorability.
The Wolfpack Council is a group of students who meet regularly and have made a commitment both to their own leadership development and to empowering their peers to reach their best. Throughout the year, membership in the group can shift to include students who feel ready and who are considered ready by both students and faculty. Each week, the Council meets with faculty advisers and the Head of School to discuss the mood of the school and work on important issues in academic, athletic, and residential life.
Another important ethic at Hyde is "Each Other's Keeper" which is defined as helping peers achieve their best through support and challenge. When students and faculty learn how to be honest with each other and truly support each other's best, everyone benefits. The first Wolfpack Council group has started their weekly meetings and has already set a tone of authentic commitment to better themselves and the school community. They include:
Dean of Students Thomas Bragg said, "This group has impressed me with their courage and humility to both look at themselves and also elevate the community to go after our collective goals." Go Wolfpack!
