We have often said that if you want to reach the deepest part of students, you must affect the biggest influences in their lives: their peers and their parents. Family education has been at the forefront of the school's curriculum since the mid-seventies. This past weekend, we welcomed most of our domestic families and some of our international families to campus for the Fall Family Weekend. We all came together during some beautiful fall weather to connect with each other and to celebrate student growth in all areas of school life. The weekend activities included:
- Academic Classes
- Athletic Contests
- Family Meetings
- Community Meetings
- Performing Arts for Everyone
- Family Time
The weekend theme was "Concern - I need a challenging and supporting community to develop my character." During one of the community meetings, a student/faculty/parent panel shared thoughts on the following questions:
- Who in my life modeled concern for others (grandparent, parent, teacher, friend, mentor)? How did that impact me?
- Who has shown concern for me by having the courage to challenge and support me? How do I feel about that today?
Everyone walked away from this meeting inspired by the contributions, which included:
"My grandmother inspired me with her courage and concern to help those less fortunate."
"I had a boss who had the courage to really give me the tough feedback that changed my professional journey. We have stayed close ever since."
"I came to Hyde from another country, and at first didn't understand why everyone was so nice; but their concern to support and challenge me made a difference in my life."
It was a great weekend of learning, connecting, and having fun with families and the rest of our Hyde community!
