Taking a Pulse

Every week at the Hyde School, there are many inspiring moments. This week was no exception. Two stand out:

Student Growth - The faculty meet twice a week to discuss students and to reinforce faculty responsibilities. At this week’s faculty meeting, we recognized students who have demonstrated growth in various areas since the start of the school year. Some of these included:

  • Growth in their learning attitude
  • Getting a new view of self
  • Assuming leadership in the dorms
  • Showing drive and sportsmanship in athletics
  • Handling their dining hall jobs with maturity
  • Being inclusive and welcoming to their peers
  • Working through conflicts
  • Getting out of their comfort zone

During the weekly school meeting, we took time to acknowledge those students and celebrate their moments of growth. Cheers of support rang out as names were read and students stood to be recognized.

State of the Union – During this week’s school meeting, we also took time to evaluate how things are going in the various areas of responsibility at the school. We received comments on what was going well and where we needed to improve. The areas included:

  • Attendance
  • Study Hall
  • Phones/Tech during class time
  • Jobs
  • Teacher/Student interactions
  • Residential Life
  • Sportsmanship
  • Leadership within the school
  • How we are supporting/challenging each other to be our best

The discussions were lively and energetic. Students asked for an earlier study hall so that they could have more time with their friends. Adults continued to suggest to students that, while they miss their phones during the school day, the benefits were palpable. Overall, it was clear that there was a lot of ownership in the community. At the end of the meeting, we agreed to try some of the changes suggested. As one student said at the end, "We all have a responsibility to make this school all that it can be. We need to trust each other and communicate."
