Every day at Hyde there are both planned and impromptu moments of learning that inspire us all. This week, I experienced three events that filled me with gratitude to be working at Hyde School.
Parent Zoom Workshops
This year, we moved away from in-person regional meetings to a ZOOM meeting format where Discovery Group parents gather virtually to learn from and support each other. Our second meeting was this past Saturday, and we explored the theme of "Taking Hold and Letting Go." We talked about this important concept and some of our points included:
- As parents, when do we step in, and when do we let go?
- Making short-term decisions while also keeping the long game in view.
- Focusing on ourselves to set an example for our children.
Each parent shared something they were working on with their child and in their own lives. Afterwards, we gave each other feedback, and it was clear that we could all relate on many levels. Some of the comments made included:
"As a father, I am trying to let go of being a provider and share more of myself."
"I continue to work on taking hold of my child's ability to work through their challenges when they arise."
"I am trying to look at my own life, my own potential, and steps I want to take to move forward."
Sing, Sing a Song!
Singing an audition has long been a tradition at Hyde. First-year students and faculty are all asked to sing a short piece of music without musical accompaniment. Veteran students and faculty can sing solos or can choose to perform a duet or musical number. While this simple assignment can arouse anxiety in all of us, once we get started, something magical happens. Performing Arts Director Pam Bertschy said about Saturday's auditions,
"The community started the time-honored tradition of auditions this past Saturday. Despite some trepidation and nervousness, the students and faculty that performed knocked it out of the ballpark. There was a lot of lighthearted ribbing and challenging to get people to perform; at one point I did have to say if they volunteered someone else, they were volunteering themselves. All in all, it was a great day filled with courageous performances and a lot of laughter, which highlighted the immense love and support that abides in this community."
