This week, a group of Hyde students traveled down to NYC to attend an immersion program in finance. They were invited by Hyde alum and former teacher, Michael Cannon '11, now a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.
The seminars were led by Faiez Ahmed (a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith Incorporated) and Michael Cannon, who shared important lessons learned during his Hyde days. They also brought in financial experts to talk to the students about the following:
- The history of Wall Street and the sectors of the financial world that intersect there.
- The basics of investing
- The psychology of wealth
- The importance of understanding where credit cards can help and hurt
The Hyde students stood out during the day for their insightful questions and willingness to engage with the topic. Not all of them are interested in a career in the financial industry, but all felt that gaining financial literacy is critical to leadership development. Cannon told the students, "I got ahead through mentors, many of whom were at Hyde, and learned how to network with others and be comfortable with public speaking."
When I asked the students what they learned, their comments showed how much we packed into one day:
- "I learned that compound interest is something I need to understand.
- "I liked the concepts of financial capital, human capital, intellectual capital, and social capital."
- "We heard a few times - There is no free lunch. Do your homework, be honest, and own up to mistakes so you build a reputation as a straight shooter."
Thanks to faculty members Tom Bragg and John Young for helping set up the trip. Also, much thanks to Hyde parents John and Saryna Young, Callie Starbuck, Jeanne Asper-Walsh, and Spike Walsh for hosting our students, Board of Governors Debbie Werner for stopping by, and everyone involved in helping to make the experience so memorable.
We finished the day on the top floor of the Merrill Lynch Building, where we took in the breathtaking views of the city. It was certainly a great day of learning!
