I was a student at Hyde around 1969-70.
I only spent a single year at Hyde School but my experience there was instrumental in turning my life around.
One incident really stands out for me. Hyde had a best basketball team i and was a real source of pride. Joe Gault, the headmaster at the time, was an avid fan of the team.
The night before the league playoffs was to begin, two of the team’s members went out drinking. When they returned, the hall proctor, who happened to be the team captain smelled beer on their breath and reported them.
They were not allowed to play and the team lost in the very first game of the playoffs.
I thought it took great fortitude in both the captain of the team and for the headmaster to both stand by their convictions in spite of the effect that this would have on the team’s prospects.
I’ve remembered this incident as a great example of standing by one’s convictions.
Hey, Frank! (How you doin’?!?) I remember both you as a classmate and the situation you describe. Powerful moment. Best to you and yours, Malcolm
Hi Malcom:
Congratulations on taking over for your dad.
I do remember you as well from that time. One thing i remember is how you could swim several laps in a pool underwater!
