style="font-size: small;"> Hustle, heart, and head-smart play won the Battle of Bath for Hyde’s JV lacrosse team this Monday over Morse’s Shipbuilders. The first half of the game seemed evenly matched as both teams traded possession of the ball frequently. Right before halftime Morse found the net and took the lead 1-0. In the second half Hyde found sharper passing and crisp offensive movement producing their 6-1 score. This game gave the Phoenix their well-deserved second win on the season.

Going into this game Hyde made some offensive adjustments which proved effective as our attack men led the team in scoring. These young men were Max Kaplan (’15) who put two goals in, Maxwell Zerrudo-Turgeon (’15) also helped in finding the net twice, and Peter Lin (’13) notching a goal. Terry Luo (’13) was our lone midfielder who also grabbed a goal on the day. The overall offensive push from the midfielders on the transition from defense to offense was the key point that produced the outcome of this game.

On the other side of the field our defense played the best they have all year. Commanding the defense was our trusted net minder Kellin Sweeney (’13) who had a tremendous game stealing 17 saves on the day. Our defense of late have been plagued with injuries which asked Brian Zuo (’14) to step up into a starting position on the right wing. Every attempt from that side was thwarted by punishing poke checks and clever positioning which sealed his earning for the games’ Dirty-Ball award. Next him on defense the efforts of Harry Hu (’12) and Marley Dutton (’13) gave the team stellar results on ground balls and clearing the ball out of the zone. Distinguished contributors to the defense were from our long stick middie Joey Romo (’15), and John McManus (’13).

The teams’ next game is the MAISAD semi-final this Wednesday against the Lumber Jacks at Hebron Academy.

05/ 14 – 05/20: Isaac Pfosi

AOW Bath

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports
<guid

Starting in the winter, during the indoor season, he not only challenged himself by starting a new sport, but he challenged his peers to see him as he saw himself. Through his leadership the indoor team blossomed, and since transitioning outside, Pfosi has gained confidence and speed. In a recent meet at Mount Ararat Pfosi placed first in the 300m hurdles, 3rd place in the high jump, and ran in two relays to help his team place second overall at the meet. In the second quarter, the Hyde defense lead by goalie Blake Smaldone ’12 saw little action because of the offensive ball possession by the Wolf Pack but some key groundball play from Rob O’Connor ’13 and defensive middies Zack Cereme ’12 and Ethan Thoms ’12 allowed Hyde to go into halftime with an 11-4 lead. style="font-family: Calibri;"> Jon Lee`12 was all business with his opponent. He bageled him in the first set and quickly took the match in the second. Ignacio Sanchez`13 handled his opponent easily in the first set winning 6-1. However, he faltered in the second and allowed the Hebron player back into the match. He buckled down, regained focus in the third set and was able to take the win. Brian Liu`12 had an off day, losing badly to a player he beat a week ago. Hopefully he can avenge the loss in the upcoming tournament. Zach Leighninger`13 and Ethan Blatt`13 had an exciting match. They struggled early in the first set getting behind 2-3. However, they changed their strategy, coming to net more frequently. This coupled with more aggressive play and better placed shots resulted in them coming from behind to tie it 5-5. They nearly forced a tie-breaker in the first set but fell 5-7. They played well in the second set with long rallies and games going to deuce, but failed to force a third set, falling 4-6. James Howard`13 and Alex Sun`14 played better than the line score indicates. Many of their games went to deuce and there were some impressive rallies. They won the first two games of the second set by finding ways to get up to net. However, they fell back into old habits and lost the next four games. It was a learning experience for them. Overall it was a tough match, one that we could have won if we played up to our potential. The team is regrouping and preparing for our last regular season match with Gould Academy this Saturday.

Bath: Hyde JV LAX drops 2nd game to Hebron Lumberjacks

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports

Athletic Director Tyler Plourde

I was recently reading an opinion piece on the back cover of the Sports Illustrated May 2012 edition, written by Phil Taylor, a mainstay columnist to the magazine. This piece, a sarcastic muse stemming from the NFL draft, asked readers to consider Andrew Rodriguez, a linebacker at Army. Taylor asks the reader to consider the direction this young man is heading as he trades what could be a career in the NFL for a lifetime of service. The article, entitled “Don’t Show Him the Money,” concludes with a simple request, “Give Rodriguez credit for making a wise decision. Just don’t say he handled it like a pro.” Through his dry wit, Taylor begs the reader to take a deeper look at the ethics that drive the professional sports industry. Then, in a different sport, but under the same ideal, with the conferring of degrees at Barry University, and the honoring of doctoral candidate Shaquille O’Neil, Taylor’s question is cast in an even brighter light.

When first hearing the story of Doctor O’Neil, I thought of it as a cute publicity stunt aimed at drawing attention to both the University and the student. Upon further research, however, Shaquille refused to accept an honorary degree. In paraphrasing his words, he wants to be respected in the field. He has exhibited extreme passion and excitement for, of all things, education. In making a commitment to his education, O’Neil has shown that basketball is not the only thing that matters in life, even to a decorated professional player. I think we might be able to say that Shaq did in fact handle it like a pro.

Our society is awash in bad examples. From Tiger Woods to Plaxico Burress, there are plenty of professional athletes that teach young people to worship talent and forget about the ethics that bind us all together. Why do these examples dominate the airwaves? Why is the story of Andrew Rodriguez cast to the back pages of a magazine? Certainly the question must be entertained. With golfer Bubba Watson dropping out of the Player’s Tournament to spend more time with his family he either knowingly or unknowingly showed all of us that his ethics are more important than those dictated by sport and money. It’s his story, and the stories of Doctor O’Neil and Andrew Rodriguez that we as a society should be holding up for our students to strive towards. It’s time to starting looking at sports as the mode to understand morals and ethics, not the avenue for questionable exploitation of such things. Fair play, sportsmanship and honesty are not opposed to competition and achievement. It’s time for athletes and coaches, agents and owners to raise their level of expectations and in doing so, demand better of all of us.

Onward, Tyler Plourde (Athletic Director @ Hyde-Bath)

Bath: Down late, the Men’s Varsity Lacrosse rally’s for a strong victory over Kents Hill

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports

3 weeks after a tough 9-3 loss in their first contest, the Phoenix finally got to face the Huskies of Kents Hill on their home turf. Frustrated by the difficult loss and aided by several weeks of positive growth, Hyde engaged Kents Hill on Saturday with an eagerness and intensity that was palpable from the sidelines. The game turned out to be an eventful thriller with several lead changes and multiple momentum swings. Leading the Phoenix charge by halting the Huskies’ attack was Captain Alec Randall (’12), who piled up 17 saves in a tremendous show of athleticism and resolve. He stuffed numerous shots from the edge of his crease and he pushed the ball on clears despite being blanketed by an attackman on his attempts.

One of the best ways to calculate hustle and heart in lacrosse in measured in the ground ball battle. The Phoenix proved their mettle by winning 29 to the Huskies’ 20 and Scott Bartlett (’12) lead the effort in scooping up an unparalleled 10 of his own. With the effort came a sense of team as Hyde gelled in their transition game, stringing together passes that dissected the Kents Hill defense. Hyde capitalized as Tobias Weymar (’12) found the net twice and garnered two assists while the face-off/crease attack dual threat, Chester Hill (’12), earned a hat-trick as he beat the keeper 3 times on the day. Inspiration for the team was never lacking as the emotional leaders for the Phoenix, Zach Tolman (’12) and Scott Georgaklis (’12), pushed the to their best effort of the season. Down by a goal in the fourth quarter (6-5), Hyde never quit fighting and they rallied for two late goals to take home the victory

The emergence of the senior leadership is apparent, but the future of Hyde lacrosse is electrifyingly bright. Junior defenseman Ryan Cassidy stepped up after a rocky start to the season and he developed into a reliable starter and Junior Connor Champagne pushed the team with a quiet but steadfast attitude on and off the field. The Sophomores, however, are the core of the team. Wilson MacMillan lead the group with tremendous hustle and spirit. Wes Miller and Zach Heatley are evolving rapidly as lacrosse players and they stand to be dangerous players in the very near future as they combined speed and quickness with improving vision and stick skills. Hybrid attackman/midfielder Brian Edwards has one of the best sticks on the team and as his understanding of the game grows, he stands to put up big numbers in upcoming years. He, along with fellow Sophomore attackman Evan Robish each put away a goal against Kents Hill. Congratulations to the Hyde Phoenix on a well-earned victory and a great show of character.

05/07 – 05/13: Scott Bartlett

AOW Bath

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports

Jon Lee`12 showed determination and stamina as he forced a third set with the Kents Hill #1 single – the only opponent to have beaten Jon so far this season. Jon was down early in the third set 0-4, but was able to rally back winning the next six games and re-establishing his dominance on the court. Ignacio Sanchez`13 made his return to the court after a week of rehabbing his back. He played conservatively, focusing on controlling the point rather than aggressively taking it from his opponent. More back pain in the second set forced Ignacio to seek immediate ice and electrodes after the match so he could return to cheer on the rest of his team. Brian Liu`12 sported a new brow of stitches above his right eye, a tribute to the dedication Brian brings to every point he plays. Though he lost in consecutive sets, he gave a valiant effort coming to net and attempting to implement strategy into his game play. After Zach Leighninger ’13 and Ethan Blatt ’13 finished their first set, it looked as though Kents Hill was going to walk away with an easy win. However, an increase in communication, better net play and a cool head from Zach almost forced a third set. Alex Sun ’14 and James Howard ’13 faced a very skilled opposing team with excellent serves and well placed shots. James realized a switch in racquets might be a good idea after he broke his into two pieces on an overhead shot.

Wolfpack Girls Lax Wins vs St. Andrews, 16-7

Woodstock Campus News

Woodstock Sports Reports
<guid
