Family Education

The character-based education my children received from Hyde has been invaluable in their lives and has made them stronger people, as young adults, and it has significantly improved our ability to function as a family.

Mission Statement: The opportunity to take the deepest look at one’s self and family.

At Hyde parents are challenged to face to ropes course head-on. Are you willing to take the leap?

Family Education is an integral part of a Hyde Schools boarding school education. The parent program focuses on understanding ourselves, our family, and the philosophy of the school. Parents and students are taught about the Hyde philosophy, including the Five Words and the Five Principles, upon which our community is based. We teach parenting excellence through the 10 Priorities, and parents and students learn tools for self-discovery.

Profound personal and family growth is contingent upon the commitment of all family members to focus on oneself–attitudes and the role each member plays in holding the family back and pushing the family forward.

Family Weekends
Every school year, parents, along with their children, participate in two Family Weekends on the campus and one three-day Family Learning Center. Parents also participate in monthly regional meetings, and one regional retreat.

Regional Meetings
The regional meetings teach and help parents understand the importance of their own growth in creating a character culture in the home. Parents will inspire their children when they model character on a daily basis, take responsible risks, and share their struggles.

Three-day Family Learning Center (FLC)
The Family Learning Center three-day workshops provide a variety of opportunities for seminar discussions by each parent and student in conjunction with other families. Parents stay on campus in a wing of a large Woodstock dormitory or at the Renewal Center on the Bath campus.

Experiences include:

  • Teaching moments offered by students, teachers, and parents
  • Opportunities for parents and students to share insights
  • Facing physical challenges (such as the ropes course)
  • Facing creative challenges (such as singing a solo or a duet)
  • Learning what it takes to be a role model and leader in the community.

Parents will complete a Family Learning Center workshop with their student each year. For second-, third-, and fourth-year families, there is an opportunity to experience a Family Learning Center retreat on Hyde Schools’ property at the Black Wilderness Preserve in Eustis, Maine.
