Wolfpack Girls Varsity Soccer Falls to Gould, 1-3

September 13, 2017

Hyde – 1
Gould – 3

The Wolfpack hosted fellow MAISAD team Gould Academy for their season opener. Gould’s success over the past few years has made them a formidable opponent and it was a highly anticipated game. Unfortunately, the Hyde girls came out sluggish and had little success getting organized in the first half. Play was dominated by Gould with Hyde only managing one shot on net. A standout performance was delivered by goalkeeper Alice Yokabaskas ’19 as she deflected most of the shelling. However, Gould was able to find the net three times over the course of the period, taking the half 3-0.

The second half was truly a different game. This time it was Gould that only managed three shots on net after eleven in the first half. Kyra Holdampf ’19 played an outstanding game at right back, turning several threatening balls away. Eliza Burroughs ’18 began to command the midfield and distribute to strikers and outside mids. Captain Lauren Leask ‘18 played with passion and dominated the right side. After several close attempts, Hyde finally found the back of the net on a corner kick by Eliza Burroughs ’18 that was finished by junior Ingrid Schroeter ’19. The remainder of the half was all Wolfpack but it stands as the lone goal of the game.  A true grit moment arrived late in the second half when a disorganized defense and quick Gould transition left an empty net shot that was defended by senior Marlena DeCastro ‘18. Her effort preserved the Wolfpack’s second half shutout. The team has a week off to prepare for their next match on September 21 against Canadian team Rothesay-Netherwood.

Quick stats:

Hyde – shots: 7, corner kicks: 2, saves: 12, fouls: 10, offsides: 2

Gould – shots: 14, corner kicks: 4, saves: 4, fouls: 6, offsides: 0
