The Hyde Phoenix hit the road for the final time in the 2015-2016 season to compete at the National Prep Wrestling Championships at Lehigh University. Their lone representative was New England Champion Brett Gerry, competing in the 182 pound weight class.

Brett entered the tournament seeded as the #8 wrestler in a very competitive bracket and knowing he would need to absolutely bring his best to earn the right to be named National Prep All-American.

To say that Brett had an absolutely incredible weekend would be an understatement. Brett battled his way through a very challenging bracket to finish in 4th place. He stuck to his style of impeccable positioning and constant offensive pressure to earn wins in the first two rounds, defeating wrestlers from Virginia and Pennsylvania (the 9th seeded wrestler in the tournament). In the Championship Quarter-Finals, Brett faced the #7 ranked 182 pounder in the nation and ended up on the short end of the score in the #1 vs #8 matchup, sending the Phoenix to the wrestle-backs.

Brett’s opponent in the elimination round was a very accomplished wrestler from Blair Academy, the perennial high school wrestling powerhouse. Brett was poised and powerful and earned a commanding 7-0 win to become a National Prep All-American!

In earning All-American, Brett also completed the Hyde vs Hyde season sweep for the Phoenix of Bath! This year 267 independent schools competed in the National Prep league and of these, 136 qualified wrestlers to compete for National titles at Lehigh. Brett’s single-handed efforts earned Hyde-Maine a tie for 49th place out of 136 teams competing!

On Saturday morning, Brett began the climb up the All-American podium with a solid win over an opponent from The Hill School in PA to reach the consolation semi-finals and battle with a returning All-American wrestler from Mount St. Joseph’s in Baltimore. The match was closely contested with Brett’s takedown being matched by two MSJ escapes to knot the score at 2-2. As the wrestlers went out of bounds and restarted with :09 left in regulation, it seemed that the match was headed to sudden victory overtime. Brett, however, had other ideas: As the seconds ticked away, he executed a Granby roll to reverse his opponent in the final :02 seconds of the bout. Brett won 4-2 and advanced to the Consolation Finals!

Brett faced off against a very accomplished wrestler from The Baylor School in TN for 3rd place, and despite his best efforts, finished the tournament in 4th place. Wrestling is a sport where every point and every outcome is earned. By wrestling to the Consi-Finals and earning 4th place, Brett not only wrestled well beyond his pre-tournament seed, he represented Hyde and Maine on the biggest stage and earned his place among the nation’s best wrestlers.

Brett Gerry’s All-American finish at the 2016 National Prep Wrestling Championships is the stuff of legends! He capped off an incredible wrestling career which saw him earn 3 Maine State Individual Championships (4 State Titles with his team – Marshwood High) and a post-graduate season where he went undefeated until the National Quarter-Finals, earning a gold medal in Freestyle at the Eastern Canada Championships as well as Championships at the Northern New England Invitational (Outstanding Wrestler), Class A League Championships, and New England Independent Schools Championships. Brett completed his career in the same way he has wrestled every match – with toughness, tenacity, sportsmanship, humility, and relentless competitiveness. Hyde could not have asked for a better representative of the wrestling program and the school.
