On Friday and Saturday last week, Bemnet Banks competed in the National Prep Wrestling Tournament. Approximately 440 of the top Prep School wrestlers in the country met at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania to battle for National Supremacy and the title of All-American. Bemnet represented the Phoenix well as he worked his way through the 32-man bracket. On Friday, Bemnet went 3-0, including an exciting overtime win against a member of Blair Academy, the top-ranked team in the country.
Bemnet started Saturday with a Semi-Final match against Tyler Rill of Mount Saint Joseph of Maryland. Despite a great effort, Banks lost to the nationally accomplished wrestler 11-7. In a strong recovery, Bemnet went on to win his Consolation Semi-Final 8-1. In his final match of the tournament, Banks fell to a strong wrestler in from Georgetown Prep, which earned Bemnet a 4th place finish and All-American Status.
