style="font-size: small;"> Hustle, heart, and head-smart play won the Battle of Bath for Hyde’s JV lacrosse team this Monday over Morse’s Shipbuilders. The first half of the game seemed evenly matched as both teams traded possession of the ball frequently. Right before halftime Morse found the net and took the lead 1-0. In the second half Hyde found sharper passing and crisp offensive movement producing their 6-1 score. This game gave the Phoenix their well-deserved second win on the season.

Going into this game Hyde made some offensive adjustments which proved effective as our attack men led the team in scoring. These young men were Max Kaplan (’15) who put two goals in, Maxwell Zerrudo-Turgeon (’15) also helped in finding the net twice, and Peter Lin (’13) notching a goal. Terry Luo (’13) was our lone midfielder who also grabbed a goal on the day. The overall offensive push from the midfielders on the transition from defense to offense was the key point that produced the outcome of this game.

On the other side of the field our defense played the best they have all year. Commanding the defense was our trusted net minder Kellin Sweeney (’13) who had a tremendous game stealing 17 saves on the day. Our defense of late have been plagued with injuries which asked Brian Zuo (’14) to step up into a starting position on the right wing. Every attempt from that side was thwarted by punishing poke checks and clever positioning which sealed his earning for the games’ Dirty-Ball award. Next him on defense the efforts of Harry Hu (’12) and Marley Dutton (’13) gave the team stellar results on ground balls and clearing the ball out of the zone. Distinguished contributors to the defense were from our long stick middie Joey Romo (’15), and John McManus (’13).

Jon Lee ‘12 loves his bagels. In the final regular season appearance of his High school tennis career, Jon beat his opponent in twelve straight games. Ignacio Sanchez`13 showed signs of nervousness before his match, recalling his brutal loss at the hands of his Gould rival two weeks prior. The 6 – 0, 6 – 0 loss Ignacio was remembering was soon to be replaced by his 6 – 0, 6 – 3 win over the same opponent. This is a great shift in momentum for Ignacio as he has struggled to come back from a back injury suffered earlier in the season. Brian Liu`12 had some solid rallies but had trouble cracking his opponent’s consistent groundstrokes, and struggled as a result. Zach Leighninger ’13 and Ethan Blatt ’13 had been working on their net play since their loss at Hebron earlier in the week. They had trouble transitioning this into gameplay however due to interpersonal problems between the two. Herman Gao ’12 and James Howard ’13 gave a good effort coming to net and focusing on their serves, but lost in the end despite their focus. The Hyde team prepares for the Maisad Championship Tournament this upcoming week. The defending Maisad champions hope to have a repeat win in the tournament again this year.

Bath: Hyde-Bath Track – Mt. style="font-family: Calibri;"> Jon Lee`12 was all business with his opponent. He bageled him in the first set and quickly took the match in the second. Ignacio Sanchez`13 handled his opponent easily in the first set winning 6-1. However, he faltered in the second and allowed the Hebron player back into the match. He buckled down, regained focus in the third set and was able to take the win. Brian Liu`12 had an off day, losing badly to a player he beat a week ago. Hopefully he can avenge the loss in the upcoming tournament. Zach Leighninger`13 and Ethan Blatt`13 had an exciting match. They struggled early in the first set getting behind 2-3. However, they changed their strategy, coming to net more frequently. This coupled with more aggressive play and better placed shots resulted in them coming from behind to tie it 5-5. They nearly forced a tie-breaker in the first set but fell 5-7. They played well in the second set with long rallies and games going to deuce, but failed to force a third set, falling 4-6. James Howard`13 and Alex Sun`14 played better than the line score indicates. Many of their games went to deuce and there were some impressive rallies. They won the first two games of the second set by finding ways to get up to net. However, they fell back into old habits and lost the next four games. It was a learning experience for them. Overall it was a tough match, one that we could have won if we played up to our potential. The team is regrouping and preparing for our last regular season match with Gould Academy this Saturday.

Bath: Hyde JV LAX drops 2nd game to Hebron Lumberjacks

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports

3 weeks after a tough 9-3 loss in their first contest, the Phoenix finally got to face the Huskies of Kents Hill on their home turf. Frustrated by the difficult loss and aided by several weeks of positive growth, Hyde engaged Kents Hill on Saturday with an eagerness and intensity that was palpable from the sidelines. The game turned out to be an eventful thriller with several lead changes and multiple momentum swings. Leading the Phoenix charge by halting the Huskies’ attack was Captain Alec Randall (’12), who piled up 17 saves in a tremendous show of athleticism and resolve. He stuffed numerous shots from the edge of his crease and he pushed the ball on clears despite being blanketed by an attackman on his attempts.

One of the best ways to calculate hustle and heart in lacrosse in measured in the ground ball battle. The Phoenix proved their mettle by winning 29 to the Huskies’ 20 and Scott Bartlett (’12) lead the effort in scooping up an unparalleled 10 of his own. With the effort came a sense of team as Hyde gelled in their transition game, stringing together passes that dissected the Kents Hill defense. Hyde capitalized as Tobias Weymar (’12) found the net twice and garnered two assists while the face-off/crease attack dual threat, Chester Hill (’12), earned a hat-trick as he beat the keeper 3 times on the day. Inspiration for the team was never lacking as the emotional leaders for the Phoenix, Zach Tolman (’12) and Scott Georgaklis (’12), pushed the to their best effort of the season. Down by a goal in the fourth quarter (6-5), Hyde never quit fighting and they rallied for two late goals to take home the victory

The emergence of the senior leadership is apparent, but the future of Hyde lacrosse is electrifyingly bright. Junior defenseman Ryan Cassidy stepped up after a rocky start to the season and he developed into a reliable starter and Junior Connor Champagne pushed the team with a quiet but steadfast attitude on and off the field. The Sophomores, however, are the core of the team. Wilson MacMillan lead the group with tremendous hustle and spirit. Wes Miller and Zach Heatley are evolving rapidly as lacrosse players and they stand to be dangerous players in the very near future as they combined speed and quickness with improving vision and stick skills. Hybrid attackman/midfielder Brian Edwards has one of the best sticks on the team and as his understanding of the game grows, he stands to put up big numbers in upcoming years. He, along with fellow Sophomore attackman Evan Robish each put away a goal against Kents Hill. Congratulations to the Hyde Phoenix on a well-earned victory and a great show of character.

Bath: Men’s Varsity Tennis vs. Kents Hill

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports

With time, patients, and hard work victory can come, and so it did for Hyde’s JV squad this past Wednesday. Over half the season has gone by for these young men; some which are familiar with the sport and some brand new. All of which enjoyed their first win of the season over Hyde Woodstock by a margin of only one goal.

The offensive assault was led by Chris Proach (’14) playing in his first game finishing with three tempo changing goals. Alongside him in the attack was Chris Liu (’13) who found the goal two times, Maxwell Zerrudo-Turgeon (’15) peppering the net in several efforts to notch a goal, and Max Kaplan (’15) finding the net early in the fourth quarter. Notable offensive hustle awards go to Andy Li (’13), Hung Zhao (’15), and Andy Burgess (’15) who helped set up many key plays which led to scoring results.

Defensively our spear point was Joey Romo (’15) who took care of virtually every fast break opportunity the Wolf Pack tried to bring to our net. Brian Zuo (’14) made his first debut this game with a pronounced impact shutting down any attempt of shooters coming from the left side of the net. Finally our net minder Bobby Elliott (’15) held between the pipes with confidence making twelve saves on the day and also tacking on an assist which is seldom found at this position.

We have been hard at work in practices these past few weeks and it showed here in this match up. With only a few games left in the season our boys are excited to finish out strong. Their next competition is this upcoming Saturday at Kent’s Hill.

Bath: WVL vs. Kents Hill

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports

Hyde lady laxers travelled to Kents Hill Wednesday afternoon to face the Huskies for the second time this season. Hopes were high for a successful rematch—the Phoenix were within two the last time the teams met—but Hyde came off the bus flat. Kents Hill was able to put seven up on the scoreboard before Carolyn Moore netted one with ten minutes remaining in the first half. Shannon Ward picked up her third goal of the season just fifteen seconds later after picking up a loose rebound. Laughlynn Bragg scored her first goal of the game with four minutes left in the half after the attack settled the ball calmly for one of the first times all half, but Hyde still remained down by 7 as the halftime buzzer sounded. Caroline Hammond had 9 saves in net in the first half, staying strong despite Hyde’s defensive struggle. The second half saw a better defensive presence for Hyde, as the unit anchored by MengMeng Zhang focused on sliding to ball and playing help defense. The two teams traded goals for the duration of the second half and although Hyde made some positive changes in their game, they were unable get out from the hole they dug for themselves. Laughlynn Bragg scored six more goals during the second half by driving to net; four of those drives directly resulting from Hyde winning the draw or face-off. The possession of the ball after a draw continues to be a key factor in Hyde’s game. Amy Ginsberg finished off Hyde’s scoring in the last three minutes of the game, making the final score 18-10. Hyde is on the road again headed to Hebron Academy Friday afternoon.

Bath: Men’s Varsity Tennis vs. Hebron Academy

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports

Captain Jon Lee`12 beat his opponent easily in straight games 6-0,6-0. Ignacio Sanchez`13 was forced to sit this one out due to back strain. He is currently engaging in an intensive rehab program with the hopes that he can rejoin the team soon. Consequently, Brian Liu`12 was called upon to fill the 2nd singles slot. True to form for him, his match was one of the longest of the day. He won the first set 6-4 with many long rallies and deuce games. He played aggressively, coming to net frequently to hit forehand volley winners. During the second set, he came off the court briefly to attend to a rather large gash in his forehead, the result of a self-inflicted wound that happened while following through on a shot. When he left the court the score was 2-2. After returning, he went down a game to make it 2-3 in favor of the Hebron player. Brian battled back in true warrior fashion and won the set 6-4 to win the match. His determination, leadership and competitive spirit helped him overcome the injury and was a great example for the underclassmen on the team. After his victory he headed to the local hospital for stitches. Ethan Blatt`13 had an exceptional match against his superiorly skilled opponent. The other player had a strong serve and clean, classical looking strokes. Ethan played hard the first set, but lost in a close one 4-6. In the second set and made some adjustments to his game; moving his opponent around, and keeping the ball deep when returning. This upset the Hebron players balance and momentum switched, allowing Ethan to win the second set easily 6-3, forcing a third set. By this time the other two matched had been completed and Hebron and Hyde were tied 2-2 for the match. This really put the pressure on him to win the last set to secure the win for the team. However, Ethan faltered early, going down 1-5. In the seventh game he started a comeback that was an amazing display of tenacity and raw nerves. His opponent needed to win only one game to take the match. However, Ethan was having none of it. He proceeded to win the next 4 games to tie the score at 5-5. He served the next game which went to deuce multiple times but in the end he fell in a really close one 5-7. He stepped up to the challenge and did absolutely everything he could to win the match. Despite the loss, he made his team proud. Zach Leighninger`13 and James Howard`13 struggled in the first set of their match losing fairly quickly in short games. However, they refocused during the break between sets and did a much better job in the second set, forcing many games to deuce. Nicky Li`13 and Herman Gao`13 had a tough day, losing in straight games. They will be facing some challenge matches from team members who wish to take their spots at 2nd doubles during practice this week. Hopefully some competition from within the team will make them stronger. They are both new to the sport, have been working hard, and show a lot of promise if they keep at it. Overall a tough loss, but the sting was lessened by the gallant effort and commitment displayed by these athletes.

Bath: Men’s Varsity Tennis vs. Gould Academy

Athletics

Bath Sports Reports

Jon Lee`12 had a slow start in his first set against his south-paw opponent. Late in the first set he battled his way back to take the set in a 7-2 tie-breaker. He carried this momentum into the next set and won handedly 6-1. Ignacio Sanchez`13 started the match with lower back discomfort, something that he had been rehabbing during the week of practice. Unfortunately, this condition worsened in the first game of the first set and prevented him from playing to his full potential. Brian Liu`12 had difficulty early in the match and lost the first set in short games. However, during the break between sets, he vowed to refocus and play with more intensity. True to his word, he started the second set up 2-1. Many games went to deuce and he played hard until the final point of the match. It was a tough loss for him, but he demonstrated tenacity and poise. Both doubles teams had an off day. They struggled with communication, frequently finding themselves out of position and on the defensive for most of the match. The team had a short but intense debrief(seminar) after returning to school to address some of the issues surrounding the challenges of the mental aspect of the game. Hopefully some of these deficiencies in mindset(attitudes) can be overcome in the coming week before the next match.

The Hyde Women’s Varsity Lacrosse team traveled to Bethel, Maine on Saturday afternoon to take on MAISAD powerhouse Gould Academy in their first matchup of the season. The Hyde team started off flat, and after senior Laughlynn Bragg found the back of the net first, the Phoenix saw Gould go on a 6-0 run. After a timeout and a defensive overhaul the Phoenix kicked it into gear, finding their rhythm and scoring five more goals before the end of the half. Hyde went into halftime down 6-9. Bragg had three goals in the first half and Shannon Ward, Amy Ginsberg and Carolyn Moore had one apiece. This was a big game for Ward, who transitioned the ball from one end of the field to the other with ease, and scooped up 7 ground balls. Ginsberg had 5 ground balls and Moore collected 4. This triad of underclassmen led the team on Saturday with their grit and determination. Goals in the second half were scored by Ginsberg, Ward, Moore, and senior Zaji Lieberman, whose leadership and energy on both ends of the field has not gone unnoticed this season. Other noteworthy players in this game were newcomer Julia Jackson and senior MengMeng Zhang, who were contributors on defense, as well as Raquel Glassner who has also started to show her stuff on attack, picking up a ground ball and becoming a more consistent part of the offensive rotation. This is a big week of MAISAD competition for the Lady Phoenix, who will take on Kent’s Hill on Wednesday and Hebron Academy on Saturday. Hyde fell to Kent’s Hill 8-10 in their first game this season, and the team is looking forward to their chance at redemption.

Amidst the bustling world that is Family Weekend at Hyde, the Varsity Men’s Lacrosse Team took two hours to encounter their sister school, Hyde – Woodstock, on the turf Friday afternoon. For the first six minutes, the Phoenix met the challenge of a well-coached and well-disciplined Wolfpack team head on. Captain goalie, Alec Randall (’12), stifled many of the Woodstock advances and he was the team’s top performer as well as playing his best game to date. Unfortunately, the Bath squad did not sustain the composure of the opening minutes and they fell victim to ball watching on defense and a lack of movement off of the ball on offense.

Chester Hill (’12) continued to be the scoring threat for the Phoenix as he put two away against the stingy Woodstock defense. While being a presence around the offensive crease, Chester also engaged in a battle at the face-off “x”. Losing 10 of the first 11 face-off’s to the opposing face-off man, Chester not only continued to fight hard, but he adapted as well and went on to win 5 of his next six face-offs. Wes Miller (’14) also continued to show positive attitude and growth on the field, as did long-stick midfielder Andrew Kraai (’14).

<span
