Summer X

2010 DATES: 7/3/10 - 7/31/10

The week I spend at the Pine Tree Camp will be one that I will take with me for the rest of my life.

The week at the Pine Tree Camp is often the most memorable for Summer X students.

Adventure and experiential based learning rules the day at Summer X as teenagers choose to participate in a week or several weeks of action. Summer X participants often describe the program as one of the most exciting and exhilarating experiences of their lives.

Whether it be canoeing in the Maine wilderness, writing, and painting or dancing at fine arts camp; getting a head start in the college process at college camp, volunteering at Pine Tree Camp for children and adults with disabilities; or helping to build homes for those in need through Habitat for Humanity, Hyde faculty encourage participants to new heights of self-discovery by engaging in the action-based philosophy that defines Summer X.

PROGRAM OFFERINGS

Liberal Arts Immersion X (Two Weeks: 7/3 - 7/17)
Are you interested in exploring your intellectual curiosity and strengthening your critical thinking and writing skills?  Do you fancy yourself a bit of a philosopher, debater, or renascence man or woman?  Have you ever wondered what exactly the “liberal arts” is?  If so, you are a perfect candidate for our two-week immersion into Hyde’s Liberal Arts Immersion X Program.

Work closely with our liberal arts faculty and surround yourself in the beauty of the turn-of-the-century Hyde Mansion as you explore the great philosophers, writers, poets, scientists and mathematicians of the past and present.  Campus-based learning will be enhanced by field trips to local museums, art galleries, music venues and other cultural workshops/experiences.  We will also plan to visit and tour at least one local, nationally, top-ranked liberal arts colleges at Bates, Bowdoin, or Colby.

Each student will submit a capstone project that will consist of a written position paper and an oral presentation that will explore the modern day relevancy of a liberal arts education.  The liberal arts immersion will culminate in a formal debate of the same topic, with students presenting and defending each side of the argument. Arts X (One Week: 7/24 - 7/31)
Are you tortured by the thought of having to choose between which do you like more:  song & dance, music & songwriting, drawing & painting, or acting & performing?  Why choose one, when you can have it all at Fine Arts X.

Specific skills and prior training are not necessary: the only prerequisite will be a desire to create, learn new techniques, and enjoy the art of expression.  Experienced and accomplished Hyde faculty musicians, artists, and performers will work closely with participants to give them a unique fine arts experience.

Campus-based activities will include songwriting sessions in Hyde’s own professional recording studio and music booths, acting, performing and dancing in our multi-dimensional theater, and drawing and painting the beautiful landscapes and architecture of our turn-of-the-century campus.  On-campus activities will be enhanced by trips to take in the excellent summer local and regional theater, music and art offerings of southern and mid-coast Maine.

Arts X will culminate in a performance which will include original music, performances and artistic pieces by the participants. INQUIRE TODAY

Pine Tree Camp X (One Week: 7/24 - 7/31)
Do you want REALLY want to make a difference in someone’s life this summer?  Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to give back?

Are you looking for a life-changing experience?

Hyde students, siblings, and parents have volunteered at Pine Tree Camp, a camp for teens with disabilities, since the inception of Summer X in 2000. Through your encouragement and your support, each camper is challenged to “become all they can” and “be their best” in every camp function and program.  In addition to helping the disabled campers, volunteers, like you, will establish meaningful and special relationships with other volunteers and camp staff alike.

For people with disabilities - and for those who work side-by-side with them - Pine Tree Camp can be one of the most memorable experiences of a lifetime. INQUIRE TODAY
