The mission of the Hyde Foundation is to establish a better way to prepare American youth for life by introducing and then developing the Hyde character development program in schools, families, and communities nation-wide.

Though Hyde’s roots are woven in the boarding school model, it has broadened its vision to include a public school model.

Hyde Leadership Charter School of Bronx, NY (Hyde-Bronx)

Founded in 2006, Hyde-Bronx will serve Kindergarten and Grades 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8 its third year, with growth anticipated to grade 12 in seven years. Presently, the school’s enrollment is 445 students. There is a waiting list for applicants.Head of School Joanne Goubourn observes: “Hyde-Bronx is a daily demonstration of love and concern for children and families. It connects the hopes and dreams of all students, parents, and staff. Driven by the core belief that every person is gifted with a unique potential, this is simply an exciting place to be.”

The amazing work accomplished by the school’s staff and board of trustees speaks volumes:

  • After only one year of instruction, seventh graders improved their performance on the NYS English Language Arts by 11 percentage points and 10.4 percentage points in math.
  • The NYC Department of Schools was so impressed by the Hyde-Bronx school’s academic growth, it asked to use its progress report for its training session, saying “Your school’s report tells a particularly fascination story about the amount of growth you were able to make in one year with your students, compared to similar schools in your peer group. Basically, it looks like your school surpassed all schools in a 40-school peer group in terms of growth.”
  • At a time when NYC schools lose more than 25 percent of their teachers each year, teacher retention at Hyde- Bronx has been excellent. Virtually all of the school’s teachers will continue this year.
  • Hyde-Bronx received high marks from parents on a survey conducted by the Department of Education this year.
  • NYC Department of Education gave Hyde-Bronx an A in Student Progress.

Hyde Leadership Public Charter School (Hyde-DC)
Founded in 1999, Hyde-DC has become a leading example of how an urban school can reach students who come from diverse backgrounds. This is a place where students look forward to coming to school. The progress Hyde-DC has realized in its daily work speaks for itself.

  • Stanford-9 test scores ranked second out of 34 charter schools in DC.
  • Student attendance was maintained at an unmatched DC public daily attendance rate of 90+ percent.
  • Awarded Highest Parent Satisfaction in DC every year since its founding.

Hyde Leadership School of Greater New Haven
Founded in 1993, Hyde-New Haven, Hyde’s first public school located in New Haven, CT, consistently enrolls 200 students every year.

Turning Point Academy (Lanham, MD)
Turning Point Academy opened in August of 2006 as the first public charter school in Prince Georges County, Maryland. The school currently enrolls students in grades K-5th with the mission to encompass grades K-8. Turning Point believes that school culture and high expectations play a critical role in a student’s academic and social learning. They use the Hyde process for character development and parent involvement in order to maximize student success.

In the future, Hyde plans to open more public schools, share its programming with existing schools, and continue to develop partnerships with other schools throughout the country.
